While James Corden is not entirely new to the United States, he's not entering The Late Late Show with nearly the same level of familiarity to U.S. audiences as his predecessor, Craig Ferguson.

As James Corden undergoes the final preparations before making his debut as the host of The Late Late Show on Monday night, he can at least be assured he's made one "perfect" choice.
Corden tells PEOPLE that he'd already made his wish to have Tom Hanks as a guest known during a press tour back in December: "Someone showed me a video from the Into the Woods junket ... and I'm saying, 'Tom Hanks. I just think he's the perfect movie star.' "
Corden, 36, continues, "I'm so just overjoyed that he is going to be the first person that I get to talk to on the show. I just adore him and am such a fan."

What Craig Ferguson would really like to do is ... write and produce a drama series.
The former host of The Late Late Show – who stepped down from his longtime hosting job in December – has already lined up a big new gig. He'll produce and possibly star in new scripted and unscripted shows for Lionsgate TV, the studio responsible for hits like Orange Is the New Black for Netflix and Nashville for ABC, among others.
"I don't really want to do another talk show," Ferguson tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I mean, I should never say never. But I want to look at everything else. I want to do stuff that I feel excited about going to work in the morning, to do something that's a bit different. Other than that, I really don't know. I should have an agenda!"

Hosting a late night talk show was never a career goal for Craig Ferguson.
As the comedian prepares to exit The Late Late Show in December, Ferguson, 52, tells PEOPLE he held the gig a lot longer than he expected – and never held out hope that he would replace David Letterman.
"I didn't want it," said Ferguson. "I know it is very hard to get people to believe it. It was never my inclination. I never wanted to be a late night host. I did it because it was fun, entertaining and engaging."

CBS will rely on another European to keep up the laughs in late night.
British actor-comedian James Corden, 36, will take over as the new host of The Late Late Show in 2015, replacing the Scotland-born Craig Ferguson, who announced in April that he'll step down from the late-night show that he's hosted for the past 10 years.
Ferguson's final broadcast will be in December.

Betty White has been a longtime advocate for animals – her charity work on behalf of all things furry and feathered is well-documented.
But Tuesday on The Late Late Show, she revealed to Craig Ferguson that there's at least one member of the animal kingdom that must not have gotten the memo.
