Fans of The O.C. will have to wait for baseball season to finish before they can reconvene with Seth, Marissa, Ryan and Summer. But when the show returns Nov. 3 on FOX, there's a lot in store. "Marissa's sister is coming back. Ryan's getting Bar Mitzvah'd for Chrismukkah. The kids are gonna start applying to colleges," says show writer-creator Josh Schwartz. "The end is near. It's all very emotional and exciting."

Now that the wait is over and the new season of The O.C. has finally begun (finally!), we wanted to find out what some of the sexy cast members are really like. So we asked someone on the inside: fellow sexy castmate Melinda Clarke, who plays Julie, hot-to-trot mom of Marissa (Mischa Barton). "Adam Brody kind of reminds me of my husband, in that he's very quick-witted, and he's very creative," Clarke told us at a party benefiting the International Foundation for Terror Act Victims at L.A. hotspot Tokio, hosted by producer-director-writer Chris Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy). "Adam Brody is much more of a man in real life than (his character) Seth Cohen is." As for the girls, Clarke told us that Rachel Bilson, who is "such a cutie," baby-sits for her 4-year-old daughter, Kathryn, on the set, while "Mischa's more of a young, talented lady." Also at the party: Weitz's girlfriend Heather Graham, That '70s Show star Topher Grace, O.C. executive producer McG and Barton's boyfriend Brandon Davis. As for what to expect this season on the show, McG says: "Just be prepared to be taken way down. I think we showed in the finale of Season 1 that we're not afraid to have things not work out. It's not always sunny, and it doesn't always end well. There's a lot of pain and difficulty. It's not like things reconcile immediately and we let the audience off the hook. We're all in this thing together."

CAST: In two high-profile casting announcements, Emmy-winner Kim Delaney is heading to FOX's The O.C. and Teri Polo is checking into NBC's The West Wing, says the Hollywood Reporter. For at least five episodes, NYPD Blue vet Delaney, 42, will play an ex-flame who reappears in the life of character Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher). The O.C. returns on Thursday. On Wing, for four episodes this season (and possibly as many as a dozen more in the future) Polo, 35, will play the potential first lady as the wife of Matthew Santos (Jimmy Smits), a three-term Democratic congressman from Texas with strong presidential aspirations.

The season's over for FOX's The O.C., but PEOPLE couldn't let show patriarch Peter Gallagher, 48, take his summer break without a final exam. The actor, who's been called too dashing to play a dad ("I've heard that at the beginning of any job I've ever had"), gave us a peek behind the famous Sandy Cohen eyebrows and proved how father really does know best.
