Ellen DeGeneres is generally thought of as the anti-Ricky Gervais. She's a friendly, inoffensive choice to host an awards show, who is sure to leave everyone with warm and fuzzy feelings ... right?
In her opening monologue at Sunday night's Academy Awards, Ellen bared her claws, leaving no nominee unspared. The mood may have been a little sharper than Oscar producers expected, but there's no denying that Ellen gave one of the better Oscar monologues in recent memory.
Below, the host's best zingers, ranked.

Talk about a happy homecoming!
Kentucky native Josh Hutcherson felt the love of the crowd when he attended Saturday's basketball game between the University of Kentucky Wildcats and Louisville Cardinals.
Stepping onto the court during the second half of the contest, Hutcherson was met with The Hunger Games's three-fingered salute – a symbol of solidarity used among the members of Panem – by many of the 24,396 gathered at Rupp Arena.

Jennifer Lawrence hates the word "fat."
The American Hustle star – who got into a war of words with Joan Rivers last month after criticizing shows like Fashion Police for teaching young people "the wrong values" – is letting loose in a new interview with Barbara Walters.
During an appearance on the ABC News special Barbara Walters: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013, the 23-year-old takes aim at people who bash the way women look.
"I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV," the Oscar winner says.

We already know she can dance (thanks to Silver Linings Playbook) and kick ass (as seen in The Hunger Games). But apparently, there's something else Jennifer Lawrence is good at: kissing.
The Oscar winner's lip-locking abilities got high praise from Amy Adams, her costar in the Golden Globe-nominated film American Hustle. The pair share a kiss in the crime drama, set in the 1970s.
"She does a great job at it," Adams, 39, said of Lawrence, 23, during an interview with Extra. "She has very soft lips."

Last time I was moved to tears
I was driving my [2-year-old] son Felix to school in the morning and singing Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten,” and I burst into tears singing it to him. I blame PMS. There is no reason to be that emotional about it.

Grab your bow and braid your hair, because The Hunger Games is here again. Thursday night was the first chance for true tributes to take in the glory of Catching Fire, the second film based on Suzanne Collins's dystopian but oh-so-trendy book trilogy.
The midnight showings, squealing mayhem and opening night lines may seem overwhelming to some, but plenty of Panem aficionados turned up for a first look. Hoping to discover the special sauce behind The Hunger Games frenzy, we arrived at a New York City theater several hours before the first showings to see why these diehards don't mind spending a whole evening camping out in a movie theater lobby.
