Pay or Play: Dodgers' Owners Divorce Could Cost $722 Mil

Originally posted 10/20/2009 03:00PM

Forget the Los Angeles Dodgers' do-or-die battle on the diamond with the Phillies – the real action is taking place behind the scenes, as Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his wife, Jamie, who happens to be the organization's CEO, duke it out for the future of the $722 million team.

And it looks like it's going to be messy.

At a recent playoff game, the couple shared the owners' box, but insisted on sitting in different rows. And sources say that the only thing the two can agree on is that they want to separate.

Among the issues in contention: who actually owns the Dodgers, who's the boss and how the franchise might be divided in a divorce. Jamie hasn't indicated she may step down as CEO, and no one thinks Frank wants to sell.

After three years of dating, celebrity chef Todd English called it quits with fiancée Erica Wang just one week before their planned $150,000 wedding at New York's lavish St. Regis Hotel.

Speaking to PEOPLE, a tearful English described the relationship between the two of them as "volatile and vicious," accusing Wang of "physical and verbal abuse" that reached fever pitch when she reportedly hit him in the eye last month.

"I couldn't go through with it," said English, 49. "I thought I'd met my partner, but as things progressed [it] went down hill."

A source close to English, however, also explains, "He had other girlfriends."

Chris Evert and Greg Norman: What Went Wrong?

Chris Evert and Greg Norman: What Went Wrong?

They seemed to have it all: a passionate courtship, romantic trips around the world, and each other's undying support. But just 15 months after marrying, tennis star Chris Evert and golfing great Greg Norman – who left their longtime spouses for each other in 2006 – called it quits last week, begging the question: Why?

Friends close to the high-profile sports legends, both 54, say many of their problems involved interactions with each other's children. Evert has three sons, Alex, 17, Nicky, 15, and Colton, 13, with ex-husband Andy Mill, the retired Olympic skier who was best friends with Norman; Norman has two children, Morgan-Leigh, 26, and Greg Jr., 23, with ex-wife Laura Andrassy.

"Greg got in between Andy and his sons, which caused a great deal of turmoil for Chris," says a close source. "On one occasion, Andy flew from his Aspen home to Boca Raton to spend time with his sons, and before Andy even touched ground, Greg whisked Nicky off in his private jet. He took him to his own ranch in Colorado, leaving a very unhappy Andy crying on the phone to his son." Another time, Norman told Colton that he needed to spend time with him instead of going to a planned meeting with his own father.

Christie Brinkley wanted Peter Cook to take their kids out of town to avoid having them see his TV interview about their failed marriage, but the embittered exes couldn't even agree on a mode of transportation.

In the hours before his 20/20 interview aired Friday, Brinkley learned that Cook planned on taking the couple's daughter Sailor, 10, and her brother, Jack, 13, out of town on a single-engine plane.

"Sailor called and said she was scared to get on a small plane," a source close to Brinkley tells PEOPLE.

Christie Brinkley's ex-husband Peter Cook has finally spoken out since the couple's bitter divorce – and while he owns up to having made a mistake, he maintains he had reasons for his behavior.

“It was my failing,” he admitted to Barbara Walters in an interview with 20/20 that aired Friday. “I was a great father, a great husband, and I failed as a human being… I made a mistake.”

But Cook maintained that he had reasons for his behavior: “I was seeking a connection I could not find in my own marriage,” he said of his relationship with then-teenager Diana Bianchi. “I took the cowardice way out and had an affair instead of approaching my wife and saying, “Ya know what? I’m not happy.”

It may be too little, too late – but architect Peter Cook now says he's sorry for the tryst that destroyed his marriage to Christie Brinkley.

In 2006, the discovery of Cook's yearlong affair with Diana Bianchi – a teenage employee at his firm – effectively ended his decade-long marriage to the supermodel.

If he had the chance to do it over, Cook told the Fox News Channel on Sunday, he'd say: "No, I'm a married man."

For the first time since his split from wife Cynthia, Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez spent time with his daughters.

In Toronto for the Yankees' three-game series against the Blue Jays, Rodriguez, 32, met up with Natasha, 3, on Friday, sources tell PEOPLE.

While A-Rod took Natasha shopping, a nanny stayed with her baby sister, 11-week-old Ella. Their mother, the ballplayer's estranged wife Cynthia Rodriguez, 35, is also in Toronto, but is keeping a low profile, says a source.

In an interview with the New York Post's Cindy Adams earlier this week, Cynthia said Natasha was asking for her father, saying "I miss my daddy."

Peter Cook on Brinkley: 'Shrek Was More Believable'

Originally posted 07/03/2008 02:20PM

The war of words between Christie Brinkley and her estranged husband Peter Cook has gotten as ugly as a certain famous ogre.

When asked what he thought of his estranged wife Christie Brinkley’s teary testimony in their bitter divorce trial on Thursday morning, Cook quipped to PEOPLE, "Shrek was more believable than that."

Cook's lawyer Norman Sheresky was also dismissive of Brinkley's testimony. "I think her performance was a performance," Sheresky said during the trial's lunch break. "She's a good actress. It's been two years. She should be past this by now."
