Originally posted 05/09/2008 06:20PM
Alanis Morissette says she's naturally optimistic – but battled hard times over the last few years when she hit "rock bottom."
"I took a break over the past two and half years. I was tending to my personal life," says the singer, who called off her engagement to longtime boyfriend Ryan Reynolds in 2007.
During that time, she says she hit "rock bottom" due to "a personal unraveling of significant relationships in my life." (Morissette did not comment about Reynolds's recent engagement to Scarlett Johansson.)

Originally posted 05/09/2008 11:40AM
Joaquin Phoenix walked away with more than an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in 2005's Walk The Line – the actor, who learned to play guitar for the role, also realized he loved to make music.
Three years later, the actor is now cutting an album with U.K. band The Charlatans. "Once he learned guitar he found that he had quite a lot of demons inside himself that he wanted to expel through music," the band's frontman, Tim Burgess, told Billboard.

Originally posted 05/07/2008 04:55PM
In her first new tune from her upcoming album, Lindsay Lohan sings about her assertive personality – and she's giving PEOPLE an early listen to the track, "Bossy."
Listen to it here:
Ne-Yo wrote the synth-heavy dance track with the actress in mind, he tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"I wrote it for her because when she's on her game, you can see these traits in her. When she's focused, she exudes the aura of a boss with ease," Ne-Yo explains. "When [producer] Stargate and I were approached with the task, we viewed it as a challenge. 'Can we make a song for Lindsay Lohan that people were gonna take seriously?' I think we did it."

Jay-Z jokingly cat-called to his wife as she strutted her stuff in front of cameras and ignored wedding queries, instead telling PEOPLE his fans can expect "more great things" from him: "I've got a couple more albums to give you."

Kellie Pickler Salutes Grandparents at D.C. Rally
Originally posted 05/07/2008 10:50AM
Kellie Pickler will sing on Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon to help honor grandparents who raise their grandchildren.
It's a deeply personal issue to Pickler, who was raised by her grandparents in North Carolina after her parents separated and her mother left when the country star was only 2-years-old.
The Idol alum will perform her song "My Angel," written for her grandparents, Faye and Clyde Pickler, at the AARP's third National GrandRally. The event hopes to raise awareness of and support for "grandfamilies" like the Picklers.
"I know the struggles they face," said the singer, who has donated nearly $50,000 to the AARP's Grandparent Foundation.

Mariah & Nick's Music Video Debuts
Originally posted 05/06/2008 12:05PM
Is Mariah Carey's new video a case of art imitating life? Possibly. Since her surprise marriage to Nick Cannon, 27, last week, the singer, 39, has been keeping a low profile in Caribbean, but her video for her new single "Bye Bye," which costars Cannon, emerged Tuesday. The singer cozies up to her leading man (watch for the pool scene!), while cameras follow Carey on photo shoots, autograph signings, and celebrations with friends in this montage tribute to loved ones who have passed away. Carey even honors late singers Luther Vandross and Luciano Pavarotti.
