Abracadabra! Neil Patrick Harris Makes Some Magic in Hollywood

Who knew Neil Patrick Harris and Barney Stinson had so much in common?

The actor got in touch with his magical side (just like his How I Met Your Mother alter ego) at the Academy of Magical Arts's 50th anniversary celebration at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Harris, who presides over the organization's board of directors, rushed back from vacation in Montana just to be in town for the festivities.

While toasting the organization, the actor mingled with other guests and magicians, including Siegfried Fischbacher of Siegfried & Roy, and talked about how much he loved magic as a kid, a source tells PEOPLE.

"He wanted to know the secrets that no one would share with him, so he became a magician himself," the source adds. Indeed; Harris joined AMA's junior academy as a child (he even had to audition!) and often performs at the Magic Castle. – Melody Chiu

Linnea Johansson Blogs About Making Your Home Party-Ready

Originally posted 12/23/2012 08:05AM

Celebrity event planner and chef Linnea Johansson knows how to throw a party. She's worked with A-list stars such as Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Justin Timberlake and just released her second book, Perfect Parties – Tips and Recipes from a New York Party Planner in October. Now she's lending her expertise to PEOPLE.com with two blogs geared toward your holiday party planning. Cheers!

When planning a holiday party or a bash for any time of year, you may want to start with an easy, inexpensive dining room makeover.

Giving your old chairs a new look in no time to spruce up your dining room for the holidays and/or any party occasion. Simply wrap fabric against the back of the chairs and then staple the fabric on the inside of the back ... and you have new chair slip covers in a jiffy. This works great at home, and you can easily create a new look for a room.

This trick has saved me many times. I once did an event for the Food Network to honor their stars. There was not much to do on the food end as all the show hosts and chefs sent over their recipes for a menu. The space was beautiful but the chairs I rented arrived in the wrong color. So I had to do a little last minute dining room makeover. My team and I rushed out and got fabric from the office and did a quick makeover for the chairs right before the guests started to arrive.

New couple alert?

Rose Byrne and Boardwalk Empire's Bobby Cannavale clutched hands as they surreptitiously made their way through the crowd inside the Hall of Ocean Life at New York's American Museum of Natural History Monday night. Though the duo never posed for pictures together on the red carpet, they looked to be very much together and enjoying each other's company at a bash to celebrate IFC's hit comedy Portlandia's upcoming third season (Jan. 4, 10 p.m. ET). (When asked if they were dating, Byrne's rep had no comment.)

The soiree, which began with a screening of two upcoming episodes from the series and an introduction by its stars and writers, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, continued into the vast ocean-themed room, lined with hundreds of models of sea creatures and bathed purplish-blue lights as a 94 ft. long blue whale hung from the ceiling.

A who's who of the comedy world stars – Martin Short; David Cross and wife Amber Tamblyn; and most of the current cast of SNL – mingled in the large room, chatting with each other and with fans (there was no separate VIP section) and grabbing drinks from the large bar in the center of the room or nibbling passed Hors d'oeuvre such as bite-sized waffles with Camembert cheese.
