Christian Bale: What's He Doing with Greasy Hair and a Chubby Belly?

Christian Bale is known for losing weight for films roles. But this time, the Batman hunk has packed on a few lbs. to play a '70s con man turned FBI guy in his next movie.

The Oscar winner, 39, was seen with greasy hair and a protruding belly on the Massachusetts set of the untitled film – quite a sight next to his gorgeous costar Amy Adams.

It's a far cry from Bale's more chiseled days as the Caped Crusader, and even farther from his roles in The Fighter and The Machinist, for which he lost dramatic amounts of weight.

The countdown to the Academy Awards has officially begun, and so has the buzz around what the nominees will be wearing.

Nominated actresses shared their gown plans with reporters at a Beverly Hills luncheon in their honor Monday.

Though Jennifer Lawrence joked, "I'm going to wear sweatpants," it turns out just the opposite is true. "Last time was comfort. This year, I'm like, 'Suck it up, wear a corset,'" she said. "I am going to go for fashion this time."

Matt Damon more than made up for his decade of being bumped from Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Declaring "I am in command of this ship," Damon not only hijacked the show Thursday night, but he brought along a little big-name help.

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, Amy Adams, Sally Field, Robert De Niro, Don Cheadle, John Krasinski and Oprah Winfrey all played a part.

Andy Garcia sat in as sidekick. Sheryl Crow led the band.

And where was Kimmel? Oh, he was there, all right: gagged and tied on the back of the set, as Damon took over.

Academy Award Nominations: Lincoln Leads the Pack

Originally posted 01/10/2013 08:15AM

This year's Oscars may not take place until Feb. 24, but the ceremony's host, Seth MacFarlane, already started earning his salary Thursday morning – by joining Emma Stone to announce the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' headquarters in Beverly Hills.

And the name that kept coming up: Lincoln, which reaped the lion's share number of nominations, 12, including those for Best Picture, Best Director Steven Spielberg, Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis and Supporting Actress Sally Field.

Other highly recognized films were Life of Pi, with 11 nominations; Les Misérables, with nine; and Argo, with seven, though, surprisingly, not one for its director Ben Affleck.

Governors Awards Brings Out the Oscar Hopefuls in Hollywood

Originally posted 12/02/2012 05:20PM

Sure, the presidential election season may be long over, but the spirit of democracy is still in full-swing in Hollywood, where some familiar faces are campaigning for the industry version of a spot in the White House: a gold Oscar statuette.

You'll have to wait until February to see which of your favorite scene-stealers will take home honors at the 85th Academy Awards. Until then, the industry's top contenders arrived in head-to-toe red carpet form Saturday at the Academy's Governors Awards, which serves as an unofficial venue for potential nominees to convince Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to rock the vote (in their favor, of course).

Red hot!

Amy Adams celebrated the premiere of her new movie Trouble With the Curve at Napa Valley Grille in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening.

Glowing in a red dress and beige stilettos, Adams was joined by her fiancé Darren Le Gallo and three friends.

"During their meal, the group ordered a round of champagne and toasted Amy for the success of her new movie," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

The table snacked on appetizers including Executive Chef Taylor Boudreaux's signature blue crab cakes, warm Brussels sprout salad with pancetta, chimichurri fries and more.

That's one full house!

The Soho House celebrated the second day of the Toronto Film Festival on Friday with parties for Imogene, The Master and Anna Karenina.

Trudie Styler was one of the first guests to arrive. Wearing a white dress, Styler – who co-produced Imogene – sipped on a Grey Goose Le Fizz cocktail and happily greeted Kristen Wiig and Darren Criss, who star in the film.

Upstairs, The Master star Amy Adams arrived in an elegant black dress and spent most of the party chatting with guests.

Julianne Moore was also spotted mingling with guests and relaxing after a busy day of festival activities.

Meanwhile at the Anna Karenina bash, Keira Knightley – who wore a black Elie Saab Haute Couture gown – spent most of the evening talking with costar Aaron Johnson and his wife, filmmaker Sam Taylor Wood.

Nearby, Jude Law enjoyed a Grey Goose cocktail as he laughed with friends.

On Saturday, Soho House hosted an event following the premiere of Silver Linings Playbook: The film's star Bradley Cooper held court on a corner couch, snacking and chatting with other guests.

Chris O'Dowd and new wife, Dawn Porter were also in attendance and enjoyed seafood salads, meatballs and other light fare.

Woody Harrelson happily posed for photos with fans, while Alexander Skarsgard enjoyed a beer with female friend.

Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul – in town to promote Smashed – also made the scene, chatting with fans and fellow stars alike. He even recounted when he and fiancé Lauren Parsekian saw Sally Field on a recent flight and "were completely starstruck," says a source. "But she had the same reaction toward him!" Who wouldn't?

Also in the club: Happy couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who hung out with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And Glee star Chord Overstreet, who was sporting a hat, chatted up Krasinski a bit.
