Celebrities know they've made it big when they're mocked by a Saturday Night Live cast member, and Paul the Psychic Octopus was no exception.
Andy Samberg, who dressed up as an octopus and portrayed Paul as a boozy, cocky creature on the ESPY Awards, says it was his growing fame that contributed to Paul's demise this week.
"I'm greatly saddened by this news, but must quote Paul himself when he said, 'Mo' Money, Mo' Problems,'" a deadpan Samberg, who is an SNL cast member, tells PEOPLE. "In this case, the 'problem' is death."

The 2009 MTV Movie Awards never take themselves too seriously, but this year may be the funniest yet. Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg has been selected to host the show on May 31.
Now in their 18th year, the MTV awards are well known for their zany film parodies and outrageous antics. (Remember Will Ferrell's liplock with Sacha Baron Cohen?) Samberg's comedic styles should be a nice match for the awards, which present golden popcorn trophies in unconventional categories such as "best villain," "best action sequence" and "best kiss."
"I'm super excited to host the movie awards," says Samberg. "I grew up watching the show and a lot of the past hosts are heroes of mine. Plus, my friends and I were writers for the show prior to working at SNL, so it will be a sweet and satisfying homecoming. I can't wait to act really important."

Shia LaBeouf and Andy Samberg are going where few have gone before in the promos for Saturday Night Live – the Rockefeller Center roof garden!
In one of the three promos, LaBeouf, this week's host, plays in the bushes with the SNL regular ("You're welcome" for the tour, they proclaim).
And in another, Samberg even busts out his whip for a cute Harrison Ford impression and obvious plug for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which stars LaBeouf and hits theaters May 22.
The musical guest is My Morning Jacket – not My Night Jacket, which according to the last promo might make LaBeouf's brain explode.

He's under house arrest in Atlanta awaiting trial on weapons charges, but rapper T.I. got good news from a federal magistrate judge on Thursday: He can leave the house ... to go to church. The rapper (real name: Clifford Harris) can attend Easter services at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. No word, though, if he can squeeze in a brunch or an egg hunt during his five-plus hours of freedom.
Paris Hilton is spreading good will in South Africa while on tour with her beau Benji Madden and his band Good Charlotte. The heiress graciously gave out photos of herself in a bikini – then signed them for children. Good Charlotte, meanwhile, is scheduled to play Friday at Johannesburg's New Market Racecourse before heading to Cape Town.
