Matt Lauer Was Poised to Jump Networks: Report
Originally posted 03/25/2013 07:20AM
While the news is still playing out on the future of NBC's Tonight Show, with Jimmy Fallon set to succeed Jay Leno, now comes the revelation that the network's half-a-billion-dollar-a-year morning franchise, the Today show, nearly lost its No. 1 star: Matt Lauer.
Though currently the show is going through a turbulent period in the aftermath of Ann Curry's departure and its ratings slip to ABC rival Good Morning America, Lauer, 55, was set to jump ship to ABC last year, when reports surfaced that Ryan Seacrest was possibly going to replace him on Today, reports New York magazine, in the issue hitting newsstands Monday.

When the Today show cameras were rolling, Ann Curry shined with her prowess for asking the right questions and reporting the facts.
But could she pick out the right outfit in the morning?
"One day, I wore a multicolored dress, and someone asked if I was trying to be Toucan Sam," Curry, 55, tells Ladies' Home Journal in an interview conducted just before she announced her departure from the NBC morning show in June. "But I chose it because I thought, 'This will perk up America.' "

Savannah Guthrie Survives First-Day Hazing on Today
Originally posted 07/10/2012 10:45AM
Now that she's taken her spot next to Matt Lauer on the Today show, Savannah Guthrie has plenty of reasons to be happy – and possibly a little embarrassed, too.
On her official welcome to her morning gig Monday, Guthrie, 40, endured a friendly hazing-like induction, in which viewers caught a glimpse of a favorite childhood book about an aspiring cheerleader, as well as a clip of her singing and playing the guitar to Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."
"It was just such a warm welcome, and how could you not feel really good after that?" she tells PEOPLE of her on-air introduction, which also included heartfelt comments from friends, her mother and former colleagues. "I'm thankful and excited for the future."

Ann Curry Has Heart But That's Not Enough to Co-Host Today: Critic
Originally posted 06/28/2012 03:10PM
If you were worried for Ann Curry, it's all over.
After showing up for work at Today in recent days only to see a path being cleared for her past the cameras and on to the morning-show guillotine, Curry announced on air Thursday that she would be leaving her NBC co-host job scarcely more than a year since taking over from sage, sunny Meredith Vieira.
No replacement has been announced, but in the media universe, where truth is believed to reside, the scuttlebutt was that Matt Lauer's next co-host will be the crisp and companionable Savannah Guthrie, who helms Today's third hour.

Ann Curry Announces She's Leaving Today

Ann Curry will no longer co-host the Today show – effective immediately.
"This is not easy to say," a choked-up Curry, 55, announced on Thursday's show, as her costars sat on the sofa next to her. She said Thursday would be her last day as a regular on the show, but "I will still be part of the Today show family, in a different role."
She said she has been "given a fancy new title" and will roam the globe for NBC, reporting the news.
With tears in her eyes, she expressed her gratitude and love for the viewers and the behind-the-scenes staff, and said, "To those of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I am sorry that could not carry the ball across the finish line – but, man, I did try."

Max Page famously – and adorably – channeled The Force in a popular Super Bowl commercial for Volkswagen, and now the 7-year-old is hoping that the powers will be with him as he undergoes open-heart surgery Thursday.
The operation will be the eighth surgery for Page, who was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect when he was only 3 months old, his parents said on Wednesday's Today show, hours before Max was set to check into the hospital.
"He's scared and he's nervous" about the procedure, his father, Buck Page, told anchor Ann Curry.

Kim Kardashian Plays Coy About Dating Kanye West
Originally posted 04/06/2012 09:25AM
While Kim Kardashian says she'd like nothing more than to put her ill-fated marriage to Kris Humphries behind her, she's not quite ready to divulge more about a current relationship.
Asked by Today show co-host Ann Curry in a live studio interview Friday if she and Kanye West are an item, Kardashian, 31, would say only, "Kanye and I have been friends for years. ... You never know what the future holds."
Part of Kardashian's reticence might stem from, as she herself mentioned, the fact that she and Humphries are still legally married.

Matt Lauer Announces He's Staying on Today
Originally posted 04/06/2012 07:15AM
Hardly a cliffhanger, given that the news broke out Thursday, but still nice to know – Matt Lauer is sticking with Today, he confirmed on Friday's program.
The NBC morning host first joked that he was developing a new show in which viewers could tune in every day and "see the host lose a little bit more of his hair." Failing that, Lauer said, "This is my family, this is my show ... let's keep going."
His co-host Ann Curry and weatherman Al Roker applauded, and Curry called his announcement "a huge bit of great news."
