Apolo Ohno: We Should Have Gone to Dancing Finals
Originally posted 11/26/2012 06:00PM
Apolo Ohno is a former Dancing with the Stars champion, winning the coveted mirror-ball trophy in season 4 with Julianne Hough. Finally ousted last week, the ice-skating Olympian has been blogging for PEOPLE.com about competing with Karina Smirnoff in the all-star season.
I feel good. I did my absolute best on the show. I feel like we did some amazing dances. It was a blast, it was a struggle, it was hard. I overcame all the obstacles. The fan base that was there was incredibly powerful and strong.
On one side, it was a little bit bittersweet. I felt like we should have been in the finals. We definitely were good enough to be there. But it's out of our control. With the combination of the judges' scores and the audience votes, we just did not have enough votes to go onto the finals.

They were so close!
After five couples performed mixed-up routines and a tribute to Michael Jackson on Dancing with the Stars the night before, two contestants were sent packing Tuesday night, just one week short of season 15's all-star finale. And that's got to hurt.

Been there, done that? Actually, it's quite the opposite.
With the all-star season of Dancing with the Stars now in its home stretch, the five celebrities still standing tell PEOPLE they're older, wiser and more competitive than ever – and that returning to the ballroom has been more exciting and rewarding than their first time on the show.
"You can't even compare them," says Apolo Ohno. "Karina [Smirnoff] has shown me so much about dancing on a different level now, because I think can accept it now. I'm able to express that stuff."

Apolo Ohno Blogs About the 'Hardest Week' on Dancing with the Stars

It felt good not going home on Tuesday, but at the same time, I never want to see anyone else go home either. Everybody's dancing so well and you become friends with everybody on the show during the time you're there. You cheer everybody on and you watch them grow as dancers and as people.
Now that we've made it to week nine, oh, man, I'm dying. Not really, but for me this is by far the absolute hardest week I've ever had on Dancing with the Stars. We have big top jazz, which is a dance that I know zero about. I've never done it before on the show, and I don't think we've ever seen it before on the show.

Last week, we were in the bottom two. I try so hard every single week, and I think I've really turned it up a notch since basically week five. Our fusion dance was actually one of my favorite dances. I love the paso, and the song was really strong. I thought the choreography was great. For me to feel comfortable enough to take my shirt off, I feel like it had to have been a really good moment.
It really sucks that we had to go first. Traditionally, in the history of Dancing with the Stars, nobody ever gets perfect scores going first. I don't know if it would have changed anything. I just wished we had been able to go a little bit later.

Dancing with the Stars: Tony Dovolani & Melissa Rycroft's Big Night

It was a busy night on Dancing with the Stars Monday – but not for an injured Derek Hough.
The pro sat out this week's competition, in which the seven remaining couples performed a dance fusion and competed in a swing dance marathon. But Hough's partner Shawn Johnson was in good hands with her season 8 partner, Mark Ballas.
Keep reading to find out how they did in the dance fusion, which required the couples to blend two different styles during one song, and the four-minute swing marathon.

I was nervous during Tuesday's elimination. I'm standing there next to Sabrina [Bryan], thinking about how she also had a perfect score and she's the overall highest scorer. She's just been so incredible. You never know who is going to go home.
When Sabrina was eliminated, it was tough. No one really knows what to say, and especially to someone who is such an incredible dancer. You never want to see anybody go home.

Country week on Dancing with the Stars has featured more emotions than, well, a country song.
But neither the first perfect 30s for Apolo Ohno and Sabrina Bryan, nor the injury-rebound performances by Shawn Johnson and Melissa Rycroft on Monday night could compare to Tuesday's surprises, including a shocking elimination. Read on for more.

Maybe they should argue every week!
Karina Smirnoff and Apolo Ohno, who had a rough time in rehearsals before Monday's country music-themed Dancing with the Stars show, came out on top as one of two couples to score perfect 30s.
"We needed that," Smirnoff said of their spat, which was featured on the episode. "We got to the point where we didn't want to upset each other. We didn't want to be mean and we kept to ourselves and it just kept building up."
