Modern Family star Ariel Winter's family life has been more drama than comedy this year – but the young actress says she's grateful she has a strong support system in her sister.
"My sister is the most amazing woman I've ever met in my life," Winter, 15, told PEOPLE at the USA Network 2013 Upfronts in New York. "If I could be half the woman she is ... she's kind of who I want to be like."
The teen star doesn't just reserve admiration for her older sister, Shanelle Gray, 34 – who is currently in court-ordered care of her famous sister following abuse allegations against Winter's mother, Chrisoula Workman – but she also praises her extended family.

Her family life on TV may be a comedy, but in real life it's still, sadly, a drama.
Modern Family star Ariel Winter's guardianship case is headed for trial in October to determine if her mom, Chrisoula Workman, should regain custody of the teen.
"It's a work in progress," Winter's attorney told L.A. Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas on Friday regarding the family's court-ordered therapy sessions. "There's been no advancement in terms of reunification."
The actress, 15, has been in the care of her older sister Shanelle Gray, 34, following Winter's abuse allegations in October against her mother.

The family feud over who should care for Modern Family actress Ariel Winter, 14, has reached a truce – for now.
"It looks like the court is going to order therapy and counseling to help keep us together as a family," Ariel's older brother Jimmy Workman told reporters following an L.A. Superior Court hearing Wednesday.
"Everything's holding off and everyone's going to counseling," he added.

Ariel Winter, 14, will remain in the care of her adult sister, Shanelle Gray, for now, a judge ruled Tuesday in the family's bitter fight over the Modern Family actress.
A Department of Children and Family Services report to the court found evidence of emotional abuse by Ariel's mother, Chrisoula Workman, but that Ariel's allegations of physical abuse were "unsubstantiated."
The report also recommended that Gray be awarded permanent guardianship. A trial date will be set to settle that question.

Is Ariel Winter's mother an out-of-control child abuser – or a pushy but protective stage mom doing the best she can with a temperamental teenager?
Those are among the issues facing a judge who'll decide as early as Nov. 20 who will raise the 14-year-old Modern Family star: her mother Chrisoula Workman or her 34-year-old sister Shanelle Gray.
The long-brewing family drama exploded at an Oct. 3 emergency guardianship hearing, where mother and daughter traded incendiary allegations, according to a newly released court transcript that contains previously unreported claims.

Despite her family's courtroom tug-of-war over where and how she should live, Modern Family's Ariel Winter is just fine, her attorney tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"Ariel is doing well and she has a lot of people who are loving her and supporting her at this time, and I'm pretty confident that she'll fare well through all of this," says the 14-year-old's guardianship attorney, Amir Pichvai.
"She is obviously a very smart and articulate young lady and an accomplished actress."

The mother of 14-year-old Modern Family star Ariel Winter denied Wednesday allegations she abused her daughter, who has a restraining order against her mom and has moved out of the house.
"It's all untrue, it's all untrue," Chris Workman tells PEOPLE.
According to court papers filed Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, Winter – who plays Alex Dunphy on the hit show – alleges her mother subjected her to "ongoing physical abuse (slapping, hitting, pushing) and emotional abuse (vile name-calling, personal insults about minor and minor's weight, attempts to 'sexualize' minor, deprivation of food, etc.) for an extended period of time."

There's no slowing down for Ariel Winter.
When she's not playing Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, the actress, 14, buries herself in her books.
"It's not that difficult to balance [work and school]," she told PEOPLE at Sunday's Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times Halloween carnival on the Universal Studios backlot in L.A. "I'm big into school. I really try to make it work."
In fact, she's already thinking about her future higher education.
