Prince showed that he had a sense of humor when he guested on New Girl last month.
But when PEOPLE went backstage to watch him on The Arsenio Hall Show, in an episode airing Wednesday night, we learned a whole lot more about the Purple One.
Clad in bell-bottoms, a long black fur vest, gold chains and a tame '70s afro, the famously private star took over the show as only he could.
Over the two hours of taping on Tuesday night, Prince performed three songs – his new single "FunkNRoll," "She's Always in My Hair" and "Mutiny" – chatted on the couch with Hall, and later sat with the audience to take questions from his fans, some of whom had been waiting outside the studio for more than six hours to see him.

Forget the starry-eyed romance. Gabrielle Union says she plans to marry NBA star Dwyane Wade with an open heart – and an iron-clad prenup.
"I've got to protect my stuff," the Being Mary Jane star matter-of-factly told the ageless Arsenio Hall on The Arsenio Hall Show Monday night.
Union, 41, has made it clear she's hoping to avoid repeating mistakes she made when her first marriage, to NFL star Chris Howard, ended in divorce in 2005.

Arsenio Hall found himself moved to tears while interviewing Tika Sumpter on his talk show on Wednesday.
Hall, who was a longtime friend of Whitney Houston's, asked the 33-year-old what it was like working with "The Voice" on her last film Sparkle, which came out after she died in 2012.
"Whitney was everything," said Sumpter, who played the Grammy winner's daughter. "You'd be sitting in a corner, and I'd be just kind of quiet, they'd be changing for the set-up and she's like, 'You okay, baby? Who do I need to talk to to make sure you're all right?' And I'm like, 'I'm good' and she's like, 'All right, I got you.' She was just like a mother."

The comedian and the crooner – Arsenio Hall and Clay Aiken – squared off for the title of Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday night, seeking to be Donald Trump's latest favored protégé.
The task at hand was to create a celebrity variety show and a 30-second public-service announcement for their respective charities.
In a close race, Hall, 56, ended up winning after producing a comedy show with his team of Adam Corolla, Lisa Lampanelli, Paul Teutel Sr. and Teresa Giudice. Aiken, 33, chose a carnival theme with his team of Penn Jillette, Debbie Gibson, Dee Snider and Aubrey O'Day.
