Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz celebrated son Bronx Mowgli's first birthday with a SpongeBob-themed celebration at grandparents Joe and Tina Simpson's house in Encino, Calif.

About 30 family and friends, including aunt Jessica Simpson, arrived around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for a bounce house, cake, the singing of "Happy Birthday" and a surprise appearance by the cartoon character.

Wentz, 30, told PEOPLE last week that Bronx "likes Bob and he likes guitar – which he calls 'itar,' so we're going to have a SpongeBob party for him."

The Simpson ladies have been through their fair share of ups and downs this past year, but one thing they can always rely on? Each other.

In fact, Ashlee, who's reportedly set to make her Broadway debut as Chicago's Roxy this December following the wrap of her role on Melrose Place, is defending her big sis in the December issue of Women's Health.

"My sister has an incredible body. I feel sorry for anyone who would judge her, because she's one sexy lady," the actress, 25, says of Jessica, who's made headlines for her weight fluctuation. "It's disgusting that people would say those things."

Jessica, 29, meanwhile, already returned the favor earlier this month, when she bashed the writers on her sister's former show. "CW catching up on MP. Who writes this crap? i have had bad scripts to work with, but this? thank God my sister is amazing and got you some press," she Tweeted.

Simpson-Wentz tells the magazine that even sudden career shifts don't get her down anymore, especially now that her family is priority.

Where does a crazy Melrose Place character go after she dies? Apparently, the Windy City by way of the Great White Way.

According to reports, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, 25, isn't taking a break after getting axed from the prime-time soap. Instead, she's set to play Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago, starting in December for six weeks, Gossip Cop reports.

It's not an unfamiliar role. Simpson-Wentz played the role in the London run of the musical. It would, however, be her Broadway debut.

Guess Jessica Simpson isn't a Melrose Place fan – at least not anymore!

After the recent news that her sister, Ashlee, had been cut from the CW drama, the singer blasted the show on her official Twitter page. "CW catching up on MP," Simpson Tweeted on Sunday night. "Who writes this crap? i have had bad scripts to work with, but this? thank God my sister is amazing and got you some press."

For her part, Simpson-Wentz was more measured when discussing her character's fate.

"Having the chance to play Violet on Melrose Place has been a thrill," she said in a statement. "Although I always knew her story would come to a final, insanely unpredictable end, playing a creepy, unstable character was something I always wanted to do, so I jumped at the chance. Thanks to the CW and the entire cast and crew of Melrose Place for allowing me this opportunity."

In a recent poll, 67 percent of PEOPLE.com readers said they wouldn't miss Simpson-Wentz on the TV show.
