J. Paul Getty III, a grandson of oil magnate Jean Paul Getty and the victim of a 1973 kidnapping and mutilation that made headlines around the world, died Saturday in Buckinghamshire, England, after a lengthy illness, his actor-son, Balthazar Getty, said in a statement.
A father of two and a grandfather of six, Getty was 54 and "taught us how to live our lives and overcome obstacles and extreme adversity," said Balthazar, 36, reports the Los Angeles Times.
At the age of 16, Getty was abducted in Rome by kidnappers who said he was being held by the Mafia. His father and grandfather, then the richest man in the world (and notoriously the cheapest, with a pay phone in his London mansion), thought it a hoax and refused to pay the $3 million requested ransom. Four months later, they received a package containing a lock of hair and a human ear.

They're trying again.
Balthazar and Rosetta Getty have reconciled – and the actor says they're happy again after separating two years ago when he had a very public affair with actress Sienna Miller.
"Here's the bottom line: It was a very challenging time for everybody involved, but I loved and missed my family too much not to make it work," the actor, 35, tells Harper's Bazaar in its October issue, on newsstands Sept. 28. "Rosetta is understanding enough and spiritual enough to let us try."
Of life with his wife and their four children now, Getty says: "I feel like we're better than we've ever been."

Patricia Arquette's second directing stint for her NBC series Medium will be a star-studded affair – she is tapping friend Balthazar Getty, along with Rumer Willis and Anjelica Huston, for a gripping episode about past demons and future consequences, PEOPLE has learned.
Huston will reprise her Emmy nominated role as Cynthia Keener, a private investigator now serving prison time for the murder of her daughter's killer.
In the episode, entitled "The First Bite is the Deepest," Huston's character reaches out to Arquette for help when a friend, played by Willis, goes missing. Simultaneously, Arquette is asked by a wealthy real estate magnate (Getty) to investigate the case of his missing wife.

Now that's amore! Sienna Miller and Balthazar
Getty were spotted spending some quality time together in Positano, along Italy's Amalfi coast.
If the pictures (and locale) look familiar, well, they should: The two vacationed there together in July, when reports and photos of their relationship first surfaced.
Miller has subsequently won $26,000 in damages from the U.K.'s Daily Star newspaper after it published pictures of the pair, which Miller claimed violated her privacy.

While Sienna Miller hangs in L.A. with still-married beau Balthazar Getty, her mother is defending the couple's relationship and calling for an end to the "feeding frenzy" surrounding the scandal.
"You can't understand how a woman seeing a man who has been separated from his wife [Rosetta Getty] for months can cause such a scandal," she told the U.K.'s Daily Express newspaper. "It's awful, I can't tell you. You wonder when it's all going to stop."
Close friends of Rosetta Getty, 38, have told PEOPLE that the couple was "in no way separated" when the Brothers & Sisters star began dating Miller. One friend said: "Any implication otherwise is an absolute lie. Balthazar's affair has been utterly devastating to Rosetta and her family."

Sienna Miller is striking back against two British newspapers and a photo agency for publishing shots of her cavorting with married actor Balthazar Getty off the Amalfi coast.
The actress accuses them of breach of privacy and has filed suit in London's High Court, her legal representatives confirm to PEOPLE.
Miller and the law firm of Carter-Ruck are taking aim at the photo agency Big Pictures and News International, which publishes the News of the World and Sun newspapers, which ran a series of stories and (scantily clad) pictures of Miller on vacation with the Brothers and Sisters star.

In the wake of Balthazar Getty's announcement that he and his wife Rosetta have separated, friends say Rosetta was "blindsided" by her husband's affair with Sienna Miller.
The Brothers & Sisters star announced that he and Rosetta, 38, had separated in a statement released Monday. The announcement came after photos revealed Getty, 33 and Miller, 26, cavorting in Italy, including many of her topless.
Now pals are bristling over comments from Getty's camp suggesting that he and Rosetta had been living separate lives for some time before his relationship with Miller became public.
