A year after Zooey Deschanel filed for divorce from Ben Gibbard, the pair's marriage is officially over.

The New Girl star, 32, and Death Cab for Cutie crooner, 36, were divorced on Dec. 12, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to the papers, "Unhappy and irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties, which have caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage. There is no possibility that counseling … or mediation could save the marriage."

While Golden Globe nominee Zooey Deschanel's career has hit a high note, her personal life is a bit more bittersweet.

The New Girl actress, 31, filed for divorce on Dec. 27 from Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard, 35, according to court documents.

The papers list their date of separation as Oct. 31 – Halloween – and cite irreconcilable differences.

Ben Gibbard Was 'Awestruck' That Zooey Deschanel Even Talked to Him

The "amicable ... mutual" marital split of The New Girl star Zooey Deschanel and musician Ben Gibbard, announced Tuesday, brings to an end a relationship that began when their manager first introduced them.

"I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me," Gibbard, 35, recalling that initial meeting, said for a September New York magazine cover story on his wife (since 2009, after their 10-month engagement).

"I'd seen her movies and obviously I thought she was very beautiful," said the Death Cab for Cutie lead singer, 35.

The star of The New Girl is newly single.

Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie crooner Ben Gibbard are ending their marriage, a rep for the actress confirms to PEOPLE.

"It's amicable, it's mutual," a source says of the couple's decision to split. "The intention is to move forward with a divorce."

Gibbard, 35, accompanied Deschanel, 31, to the Emmys in September. An onlooker at the time said they appeared happy and he seemed supportive as she did interviews to promote her new Fox show.

The pair wed in 2009 near Seattle.
