Ne-Yo Is Prepped for New Orleans Concert – And the Gumbo

Originally posted 07/02/2009 07:10AM

After spending the last four months in Prague where he was shooting the upcoming Tuskegee Airmen drama Red Tails alongside actors Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr., singer-songwriter Ne-Yo is ready to let loose and head down South.

Hitting the stage at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on Friday, Ne-Yo tells PEOPLE he's been prepping his moves. "I'm a little rusty right now; I can admit that! ... But it will not show by the time ya'll see me at Essence! Don't worry!" he assures his fans. Also on the Essence bill: Beyoncé, John Legend and Maxwell.

The star, who recently started rehearsals for his month-long European tour, added: "I've been off the radar while I was shooting [the film], but I'm getting my tour legs back. Performing music is in my blood. It's not like I’ll ever forget how to do it, but anything that you stop doing for a long enough period of time, you get a little rusty."

Joe, Janet Jackson Join BET Awards Tribute to Michael

Originally posted 06/28/2009 09:00PM

Sunday's BET Awards at Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium honored entertainers for their achievements last year and served as a tribute to Michael Jackson – whose father Joe Jackson and sister Janet Jackson were very visible at the event, only three days after the death of their son and brother.

Sporting a black hat, sunglasses and a dark suit, the patriarch of the Jackson family appeared on the red carpet and told CNN about Michael: "I wish the world had recognized him when he was living. Right now, he's bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this."

The memory of Michael dominated the gala. Host Jamie Foxx made his entrance in a red leather "Billie Jean" jacket. "No need to be sad. We want to celebrate this black man," said Foxx. "We gonna go through all of Michael Jackson."

Still reeling two days after Michael Jackson's death, the music industry's biggest names are paying tribute to the King of Pop.

"The reason I am here is due to Michael Jackson," Beyoncé told the Friday night crowd at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center before her concert, where she sang Jackson's "I Can't Help It".

In Beverly Hills, the 22nd Annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards – honoring songwriting achievements in the R&B, soul, rap, hip-hop and gospel genres – became a total memorial to Jackson, as the audience observed a moment of silence and presenters and award-winners alike extolled Jackson's unparalleled influence on the industry.

Ever have fantasies about being pulled over by a sexy police officer? Well, some famous pop stars seem to be channeling their inner patrolwoman by rocking the cop hat.

Beyoncé was the first to bring the uniform back in her "If I Were a Boy" video in 2008 in which she slams an offender on her patrol car as her crush ogles her fierce ways. Britney Spears donned a sexy cop getup during her "Circus" tour, reprimanding her cheating boytoy to her hit "Womanizer." Most recently, Victoria Beckham took the trend off the stage and onto the streets en route from a flight from L.A. this week.

Even Sasha Fierce, it seems, has moments of weakness.

Before Beyoncé Knowles performed "At Last" for Barack and Michelle Obama's first dance as President and First Lady in January, the singer – who has said her onstage alter ego is the aggressive Fierce – was overcome by emotion.

"I had to tell myself, 'They asked you to do this. You have to do a great job. This is their history. Calm down. Calm down,'" she admits in the June issue of Marie Claire. "I barely made it. Literally seconds before the song started, I was crying like a 5-year-old."

The Albertina Museum in Austria got an exciting call on Tuesday: A manager for Beyoncé Knowles said that the star was on her way over.

"We have had Brad Pitt and Nicolas Cage visit here," says museum press officer Verena Dahlitz. "So this was not big news for us – to have celebrities visit."

Thirty minutes later, a stretch limo arrived and a sunglass-wearing woman stepped out surrounded by five burly bodyguards. Museum officials were immediately skeptical. "She was too thin for Beyoncé," says Dahlitz. "I thought she had probably lost weight."
