Bill Engvall: Viewers Like Me on Dancing with the Stars Because 'I'm Just a Regular Guy'

Originally posted 10/29/2013 11:25AM

One thing is clear on this season's Dancing with the Stars: Bill Engvall hasn't lasted this long in the competition because of his stellar dancing skills.

"It's about your fan base," Engvall, 56, told reporters backstage after Monday night's show, which sent Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi packing. "It's about popularity."

So, what, exactly, has made the comedian click with viewers?

"I don't have big time celebrity friends – I'm just a guy," Engvall explained. "Yes, I'm a 'celebrity,' I'm on the show. But if you went home with me, you'd be like, 'This guy's not a celebrity. He drinks his coffee in the backyard and walks out in his bathrobe to get the paper.' I think that's what they relate to. I'm just a regular guy."

And the results? Polizzi and Sasha Farber were eliminated in yet another shocking dismissal, closely following Christina Milian's surprising farewell a couple of weeks ago, despite their earning high scores.

Dancing with the Stars: Technical Problems Skew Results

It was a night of exciting performances, positive reviews from the judges and a pair of big twists for the eight remaining couples on Dancing with the Stars Monday night.

First, the pairs had to perform in an improvisational switch-up challenge, which required them to show off their ability to transition seamlessly while dancing to music that suddenly changed.

Then, at elimination time, there was an even bigger twist that one no one – not even producers – had seen coming.

She came to inspire and enjoy the party.

And into week four of Dancing with the Stars Valerie Harper did just that and much more, sending a message of hope by savoring life after she was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year.

But on Monday night, sentiment finally yielded to the cold criteria of judging. After another low-scoring performance – this time an 18-point waltz – the 74-year-old star of TV's Rhoda was voted off the show.

It was a night of mostly high scores on Monday's old Hollywood-themed Dancing with the Stars.

But three couples were in jeopardy: injured Bill Nye and Tyne Stecklein, Christina Milian and Mark Ballas, and Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd.

But it was Nye and Stecklein who went home, following a fun, but low-scoring 16-point futuristic jazz number to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."

Keyshawn Johnson First to Go Home on Dancing with the Stars

Bill Nye the Science Guy is definitely a fan favorite on Dancing with the Stars, but did people's votes save the low-scoring star from being the first eliminated contestant of season 17?

Following last week's 14 out of 30-point cha cha, Nye, 57, and partner Tyne Stecklein showed a little improvement on Monday night with a 17-point Paso Doble, but it wasn't enough to keep them from the bottom of the leader board, with judge Carrie Ann Inaba critiquing his footwork.

Trailing close to the scientist was Keyshawn Johnson with an 18-point samba that Inaba said was "rough around the edges" – and Valerie Harper, who seemed like she "forgot a third of" her 19-point Paso Doble, according to Inaba.

So who ended up going home?
