Shirley Temple Black, who died Monday night at the age of 85, was the most famous child actor of her era, a successful politician, and the inspiration for a delicious drink to boot. But for those who weren't around during her heyday, what's most surprising may be exactly how big Temple was at her peak: She was Hollywood's No. 1 box-office draw from 1935 to 1938, beating out every adult star in the business, according to Quigley's annual Top Ten Moneymakers Poll.

From reality-show novelty songs to stocking-stuffer EPs, Christmas isn't Christmas until two people who have no business being in the same room have crowded in front of the mic to sing a holiday classic. Why do they do this? You should just as soon ask Black Friday shoppers why they camp out for hours in front of big-box stores. Holiday magic is a compelling thing.

Dolores Hope wanted to live in Beverly Hills, but her funnyman husband, Bob Hope, had other ideas.

"Every time I mentioned Beverly Hills, Bob would go out and buy another piece of property here," Dolores would say, waving a hand to indicate the vast spread that the two of them inhabited in the San Fernando Valley's Toluca Lake starting in 1939.

Eventually the grounds surrounding their English-style manor swelled to 5.16 acres, and the family grew to include four children. The house grew, too, to 15,000 sq. ft., leaving Bob to joke that he needed a map just to find the way to his room.
