Gywneth Paltrow got a wake-up call when she lost her father, director-producer Bruce Paltrow, to cancer a decade ago.
"When my father was diagnosed with cancer, it really changed the way that I lived – it changed my whole lifestyle," Paltrow, who executive produced the multi-network Stand Up to Cancer broadcast Friday night, tells PEOPLE.
"I completely changed my diet, and I got very serious about exercising and about exposure to toxins."

In true A-List fashion, Jessica Alba makes walking the red carpet look like a walk in the park.
But when she wants the real deal, she has a more low-key go-to: the Franklin Canyon Park in Los Angeles.
Alba, 30, is among the famous faces teaming up with the Sierra Club to celebrate the great outdoors in a video honoring Earth Day, which is April 22 (check out sierraclub.org/earthday for more).
Also dishing about their "favorite piece of America" for the environmental organization: Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, rocker Bob Weir, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Modern Family breakout star Nolan Gould.

It's not every star who caters her own book party – and for 60 guests. But that's what Gwyneth Paltrow did this week, to mark the publication of her first solo cookbook, My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness.
The volume honors the Oscar winner's late father, the producer-director Bruce Paltrow, and its launch brought out such close Paltow pals as Cameron Diaz, Martha Stewart, Jay-Z, Jerry Seinfeld and his foodie wife Jessica, fitness guru Tracy Anderson, celebrated chef Mario Batali, and Christy Turlington and husband Ed Burns, among others, not to mention Paltrow's rocker husband, Chris Martin, and her mother, Blythe Danner.
In a West Village apartment with sweeping views of downtown Manhattan, the tirelessly multi-tasking actress, singer and chef personally attended to every detail of the party – from the Arugula Salad with Smoked Mozzarella Slow-Roasted Tomato Crostini starter dish to the pink and white peonies lining the linen table runner. Replicas of the tableware will be sold on Thursday at One Kings Lane.

There's something musical about Gwyneth Paltrow's relationship with Chris Martin, the actress's mother says.
Their marriage works "beautifully," Blythe Danner, 65, tells New York's Daily News. "There's something in the musicality of their world. It's not just what they do, but their rhythm, the way they are together."
Of course, there's also another love in Paltrow's life these days: cooking. Spain ... On The Road Again, her food series with her chef pal Mario Batali, premiered this week on PBS.
"I cook all the meals for my house," Paltrow, 35, told PEOPLE in New York Sunday at the launch party. "I really love to cook."

Just weeks after Gwyneth Paltrow threw a Mexican fiesta for son Moses's second birthday, she was back to her party planning ways.
Daughter Apple turns four on Wednesday, and the 35-year-old actress has been hard at work arranging a party in London.
"She wants a piñata, which, in England, is not as easy to find as you might think," the Iron Man star recently told Live with Regis and Kelly. "And a bouncy castle and princess fairy paint."
Over the top? Turns out both parties pale in comparison to the bash Paltrow's own mother used to throw.

Gwyneth Paltrow's mother, Blythe Danner, is setting the record straight on recent rumors that her daughter's marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is in trouble.
"Oh no! They are really happily married," Danner told PEOPLE Thursday at an unveiling for Energy Vision natural gas garbage trucks in New York. "They are together all time. The public just does not see them together. They couldn't have a better marriage."
Paltrow, 35, who has been married to Martin for four years and has two children, is rarely photographed with her husband in public, and the Oscar winner (who herself called the rumors "ridiculous") says the public will never see the couple out publicly.
