Brandy had no idea that her fiancé Ryan Press had plans to ask for her hand in marriage last week.

Then again, she doesn't think her beau knew he was going to, either.

"It was a spontaneous thing for my fiancé," she said before ringing in the New Year at LAVO Las Vegas "He just felt it."

The R&B singer and former Dancing with the Stars contestant first went public with her romance with music executive Ryan Press on New Year's Eve 2011, cuddling at a Las Vegas party. On Monday, they were back in Vegas, but this time she was sporting a glimmering ring.

Brandy and her music executive beau Ryan Press are engaged, a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE.

Since then, Brandy has made no secret about what she wants from Press.

She told PEOPLE in March that her daughter Sy'rai, 10, (with producer Robert Smith) "loves Ryan, and he loves me for sure. But I don't have a ring."

Kim Kardashian Gets Dramatic in Trailer for New Tyler Perry Movie (Video)

Originally posted 12/21/2012 12:40PM

She's doing what she does best: standing – pretty in pink – in skin-tight dress in the first few seconds of the new trailer for Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.

Playing a character named Ava, Kim Kardashian, 32, is taking a stab at a dramatic role in the upcoming movie, alongside stars like Vanessa Williams and one-time frenemy – and sister of ex-boyfriend Ray J – Brandy Norwood.

According to IMDB, the film, due March 29, is about a marriage counselor (played by Jurnee Smollett) whose life changes once she begins a romance with one of her clients. (And smoldering glances aside, no specific word yet what Kim's role in the film entails.)

Still, judging by the brief clip, the movie is full of steamy, melodramatic scenes with a hot cast that also includes Lance Gross and up-and-comer Eric West.

This won't be Kardashian's first time on the silver screen. She made her film debut in 2008's Disaster Movie, and returned to the big screen in 2009's Deep in the Valley.

Ray J was supposed to be celebrating his sister Brandy's birthday Saturday night. Then he heard the news about Whitney Houston.

An extremely close friend of the singer's, Ray J (real name: William Ray Norwood Jr.), 31, broke down and cried at Ne-Yo and Compound Entertainment's annual Midnight Brunch in Los Angeles. The pre-Grammy Awards party, presented by Malibu Red, had become an impromptu tribute to Houston.

Ray J and Brandy, 33, arrived around 1:50 a.m. and immediately went to their table. Then, Ray J, with his sunglasses on and his hood up, "couldn't hold it together," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "He was sobbing."

Brandy Holds Back Tears While Recalling Fatal Car Crash

Originally posted 11/16/2010 03:45PM

Although she earned her first perfect score on Dancing With the Stars Monday night, the semi-finals episode wasn't an all-happy occasion for Brandy.

During the broadcast, the singer opened up about her involvement in a fatal car accident as part of a video presentation about the contestants' most difficult times.

"I was trying to hold back tears, of course, because I was onstage while they were playing [the footage]," Brandy told PEOPLE after Monday's show. "But I thought that it was put together well, and I got my story across."

The video showed Brandy, her family and friends like singers Monica, Whitney Houston and Kelly Rowland discussing the difficulty the singer faced after a four-car accident on a Los Angeles freeway in 2006 left another female driver dead.

Dancing: Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough's 'Flawless' Night

Originally posted 11/16/2010 08:30AM

The final four contestants shimmied – and shined! – Monday night at the Dancing With the Stars semi-finals, where each couple danced two routines. The stars were in the spotlight during their first number, in which each performed a brief solo. And Jennifer Grey took a giant step closer to the mirror ball trophy when she picked up perfect scores for both routines and earned a combined total of 60 points.

The judges dished out straight tens for the Dirty Dancing star's cha cha to Duffy's "Mercy" with partner Derek Hough. Bruno Tonioli gushed that their "execution was flawless," while Len Goodman praised the duo for their mastery of both technique and performance.

During the second half of the show, the judges once again awarded all tens for Jennifer and Derek's waltz, which Bruno called "a gem of a performance."
