Brittany Murphy and her writer-director husband Simon Monjack are just weeks away from celebrating their April 12 first anniversary. Now the couple have set their sights on reaching another milestone: Starting a family.
At a W Magazine-Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art gala over the weekend, Monjack, 38, told PEOPLE: "Please God, next year [we're] having a family!"

Paris Hilton knows at least one rule of dating: Get in good with the family. While vacationing in Maui, she partied with boyfriend Stavros Niarchos's sister at the Grand Wailea's club Tsunami. The ladies held hands and danced together throughout the night, but there was still plenty of Paris to go around. Niarchos joined the heiress on the dance floor and "spun her, twirled her upside down, and kissed her," says a source. "They laughed and had a great time." Also at the club that night: Hilton's sister Nicky and her boyfriend, Entourage star Kevin Connolly, and Mischa Barton's ex, Brandon Davis.

Brittany Murphy is in the spirit of giving this holiday season. "I'm either going on the USO tour during the holidays or home to New Jersey," the actress told us at the recent Just Cavalli/Flaunt magazine party in Beverly Hills. "I've been on two USO tours already. One was in the States and another was in Iraq, and I can't say where we are going if I go." As for her experience with the nonprofit organization, which aims to boost the morale of U.S. troops, Murphy says, "I will always be involved in the USO. Once you go over it's a part of you forever. It's nice being a friendly face from home." In fact, she has a personal connection to the USO: "I come from a military family – the Marine Corps," she says. "I have a bunch of family members in the Marines." Also at the party: Paris and Nicky Hilton, Mischa Barton, Brandon Davis, Leelee Sobieski, Jared Leto, Evan Rachel Wood and Kevin Connelly.

Melissa EtheridgeWith a history of breast cancer in her family, Melissa Etheridge has always been vigilant about regular self-exams and mammograms. "The rule is, 10 years before you hit the age your mother was at the time of her diagnosis, you should start getting a baseline mammogram," says her pal Rosie O'Donnell. "Melissa was very up on that." Even so, Etheridge, 43, was stunned when she learned the first week in October that she had breast cancer. "Wow," she wrote on her Web site, "I didn't see this coming."

The 26-year-old actress – who once dated her Just Married costar Ashton Kutcher and was engaged for four months earlier this year to manager Jeff Kwatinetz – is actually friends with an old flame's ex-girlfriend, and Murphy swears she's not the jealous type. The actress recently chatted about having such a high-profile love life, dealing with the tabloids and experiencing her "I can't believe it!" moment with fame.
