The knock on the front door of Charlie Sheen's troubled ex-wife Brooke Mueller's home came around 9 p.m. on May 2. Social workers from L.A.'s Department of Child and Family Services, alarmed by Mueller's erratic behavior in recent weeks, had arrived for one explicit reason: to take custody of her two 4-year-old twins, Bob and Max.
"It was a real mess," says a Sheen friend familiar with the incident.
But what happened next came to many as a shock.

Brooke Mueller may finally be getting the help she needs.
Charlie Sheen's ex wife has checked herself into a "long-term, in-patient treatment center" following a recent arrest for alleged cocaine possession and assault, her rep Steve Honig says in a statement.

Despite a drug-related arrest over the weekend, Brooke Mueller's camp is confident she'll come out of this debacle unscathed.
"[Mueller's lawyer Yale Galanter] "will vigorously defend Brooke with the goal of having all these charges dropped once the facts of the case come to light," Mueller's rep Steve Honig says in a statement.
Mueller, 34, who was taken into custody for alleged assault and cocaine possession in Aspen, Colo., will apparently not lose her twin boys Max and Bob – regardless of what happens with the charges.

What's next for Brooke Mueller, besides her Colorado District court date on Dec. 19?
Mueller, the 34-year-old ex-wife of Charlie Sheen was arrested Friday night in Aspen for cocaine possession and assault, a spokeswoman for the Aspen Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE.
But while the court will ultimately decide what is to become of Mueller, a source close to her tells PEOPLE: "Brooke can't stay sober on her own."
The source adds: "Maybe this [arrest] will force her to go into a treatment center for a long stay. Thirty-day rehabs won't work for her."

The socialite says when her show premieres June 1, viewers will see "everything" unfold with her tabloid-friendly pal and costar Brooke Mueller, who has been fighting addiction publicly while battling her ex, Charlie Sheen.

Charlie Sheen may be winning onstage – but will he win in family court?
The actor, 45, arrived in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday morning to seek full custody of his twin boys, Bob and Max, 2, with Brooke Mueller, the actor's lawyer Mark P. Gross confirms.
The actor was seen looking serious as he arrived in a black Rolls-Royce. Mueller, 33, wearing a multicolored top with a black skirt, showed up early with her attorneys and looked pensive. At the beginning of the hearing, which started at 9:30 a.m., the judge agreed to close the courtroom and the hearing was to be held behind closed doors.
Sheen, who's midway through his North American live tour, told a Mashantucket, Conn., audience on Sunday that he was returning to L.A. to "get my kids back" after his estranged wife missed a mandatory drug test Friday.

The custody battle over Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller's twin boys is over – for now.
"Brooke and Charlie have reached an agreement that resolves their differences," their attorneys said in a joint statement Thursday after two weeks of intense negotiations. "For the benefit of the children, the terms of their agreement will not be disclosed. They ask the public for privacy on this matter."
The agreement comes after Mueller won a restraining order against Sheen last week that temporarily stripped Sheen of all custody rights for their twin boys, Bob and Max, 2, after she alleged he made death threats against her.
