Brooke Shields Settles with National Enquirer

Brooke Shields has come to an agreement with the National Enquirer after alleging the tabloid checked her mother out of a New Jersey nursing home last month.

"Two weeks ago, Brooke Shields was forced to make a public disclosure about her mother, Teri Shields's health, when we learned that Mrs. Shields had been taken out of a care facility by a reporter and photographer working for the National Enquirer and I was told that the National Enquirer was going to print information about her condition and whereabouts," Shields's attorney, Gerald B. Lefcourt says in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.

She's got one of the most recognizable – and radiant – faces in the world. But years of sun worship caught up with Brooke Shields when she got some sobering news from her doctor recently.

"I had a spot on my face. The doctor scraped it, and it turned out to be precancerous," Shields, 43, tells PEOPLE. "I was scared."

The Lipstick Jungle actress had the spot removed and says she's doing "fine." But the cancer scare served as a wake-up call for a woman who "used to think it was the best thing in the world to be baking in the sun" and who, as a teen, would indulge in hot-weather rituals like "baby oil and tinfoil and lemon in your hair."

Brooke Shields: Tabloid Checked My Mother Out of Nursing Home

Brooke Shields's mother, who suffers from dementia, was checked out of a New Jersey nursing home Thursday by a journalist seeking a "tabloid story," the outraged actress tells PEOPLE.

Teri Shields, 75, was later found unharmed at a restaurant next door to an assisted living center in Old Tappan, N.J., talking to a freelance reporter, according to police, who say no arrests have been made but that the case remains under investigation.

"I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorized this despicable act," Brooke Shields says in a statement to PEOPLE.

Golden Globe Reactions: Brooke Shields Congratulates 'Tremendous' Tom Cruise

The Golden Globe nominations are in – and many of the new nominees are expressing their excitement, gratitude and surprise.

Some stars, like first-time nominee Kevin Connolly, were woken up by the news at 5.a.m. L.A. time. The elated Entourage actor wasn't exactly dressed for the occasion. "I'm pacing around on my cordless phone in my underwear," he told PEOPLE.

Brooke Shields, who rose early to help announce the nominations, was thrilled for friend Tom Cruise, who nabbed a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Musical nod for his nearly-unrecognizable turn as a fat, balding movie executive in Tropic Thunder. "I'm so glad for him!" Shields told PEOPLE. "I think it's ironic, all the work that he does [and] that's what he gets nominated for. I think he's done tremendous work so I think he's probably chuckling about it too."
