Brooke Shields Recalls Suicidal Thoughts After Giving Birth

Brooke Shields has been open about her struggles with post-partum depression, but in revealing new comments she expresses the true depths of her suffering.
Shields, 44, spoke movingly about the stigma of depression and her experience battling the disease on Monday while receiving an advocacy award from the Hope for Depression Research Foundation in Manhattan.
"We think and we feel that we should just be able to handle it on our own," said the actress, who is mom to two girls, Rowan, 6 ½, and Grier, 3 ½. "I've always been strong enough to get through every single difficult situation in my life. I grew up in an addictive household. My mother [Teri] had acute alcoholism. It's in my blood. I was never going to be the one to succumb to it."
After a miscarriage and seven IVF attempts, she gave birth to daughter Rowan in 2003 with her husband, TV writer Chris Henchy. "I finally had a healthy beautiful baby girl and I couldn't look at her," she said of the depression she felt. "I couldn't hold her and I couldn't sing to her and I couldn't smile at her ... All I wanted to do was disappear and die."

Brooke Shields and Jim Belushi Unharmed in Airplane Mishap

With comedy stars like Brooke Shields and Jim Belushi aboard, even a plane landing can be funny.
A small Cessna carrying Shields and Belushi ran into a parked SUV on Friday afternoon after it landed and the pilot had left the aircraft without securing the brakes, San Luis Obispo, Calif., sheriff’s officials tell PEOPLE.
The Cessna 421B had touched down at a private airstrip at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Calif., where the two celebs and others on the plane were attending a private function, says sheriff’s spokesman Rob Bryn.

A nude portrait of Brooke Shields taken when she was 10 has been removed from a major London exhibition after police visited the gallery.
Artist Richard Prince's photograph, set to be shown starting Thursday as part of the "Pop Life: Art in a Material World" exhibition at the Tate Modern, had raised the indignation of children's advocates. The room containing the shot of Shields, now 44, has been closed
"The officers have specialist experience in this field and are keen to work with gallery management to ensure that they do not inadvertently break the law or cause any offence to their visitors," a Scotland Yard spokesman said, confirming the Wednesday visit by the Obscene Publications Unit.

"I'm a closet superhero," the 44-year-old super-fit mother of two told PEOPLE with a chuckle when asked how she stays in such killer shape. Shields's real secret: She does a combination of yoga and spinning – and stays away from the dumbbells so she doesn't bulk up.
"It's not safe for me to work with weights at the moment because I just get a bit ... I respond quickly," she explained at a Manhattan launch party for the BlackBerry Tour smartphone from Sprint.

Brooke Shields Settles with National Enquirer

Brooke Shields has come to an agreement with the National Enquirer after alleging the tabloid checked her mother out of a New Jersey nursing home last month.
"Two weeks ago, Brooke Shields was forced to make a public disclosure about her mother, Teri Shields's health, when we learned that Mrs. Shields had been taken out of a care facility by a reporter and photographer working for the National Enquirer and I was told that the National Enquirer was going to print information about her condition and whereabouts," Shields's attorney, Gerald B. Lefcourt says in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.

Brooke Shields got a head start in modeling and acting, but the one thing she regrets not doing sooner? Having sex.
"I think I would have had sex a lot earlier," the actress tells Health magazine in its June issue. "I think I would have been much more in touch with myself."
In fact, Shields, 44, feels that losing her virginity sooner could have helped her with body image as a young adult.

Brooke Shields Reveals Skin Cancer Scare

She's got one of the most recognizable – and radiant – faces in the world. But years of sun worship caught up with Brooke Shields when she got some sobering news from her doctor recently.
"I had a spot on my face. The doctor scraped it, and it turned out to be precancerous," Shields, 43, tells PEOPLE. "I was scared."
The Lipstick Jungle actress had the spot removed and says she's doing "fine." But the cancer scare served as a wake-up call for a woman who "used to think it was the best thing in the world to be baking in the sun" and who, as a teen, would indulge in hot-weather rituals like "baby oil and tinfoil and lemon in your hair."

As a child star, Brooke Shields was always watched over by Teri Shields, a stage mom known for her tenacity. And now that her mother has been diagnosed with dementia and is living in an assisted living facility, it's Brooke who watches over Teri, say friends of the star.
"Her devotion is very apparent,” says longtime pal Anna Strasberg. "Brooke takes care of Teri. There's a bond there. It's not a public thing for show. It's very deeply personal."
When New Jersey police informed Shields, 43, that a reporter and a photographer had checked her mother out of her assisted living facility on May 14, Shields was forced to go public with a painful decision – that she had moved her mother, now 75, into the nursing home.

Brooke Shields's mother, who suffers from dementia, was checked out of a New Jersey nursing home Thursday by a journalist seeking a "tabloid story," the outraged actress tells PEOPLE.
Teri Shields, 75, was later found unharmed at a restaurant next door to an assisted living center in Old Tappan, N.J., talking to a freelance reporter, according to police, who say no arrests have been made but that the case remains under investigation.
"I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorized this despicable act," Brooke Shields says in a statement to PEOPLE.
