Kate & Will in Bucklebury: What's Next for the Prince of Cambridge

After a busy Wednesday that included a visit from his paternal great-grandmother, the Queen, and a road trip to the Bucklebury home of his maternal grandparents, the Middletons, William and Kate's new arrival can now focus on his next official duty: becoming the center of attention for his parents.

"There'll be a little bit of time when they get to know the baby. A little bit of downtime," an aide tells PEOPLE.

But the new mom and dad aren't facing their new roles alone – Pippa Middleton and boyfriend Nico Jackson have already been to Kensington Palace to help take care of the newborn and help the Duke and Duchess settle in, the aide adds.

Away from the Palace and through the supporters, to grandmother's house we go!

After a visit from great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace on Wednesday, The Duke, Duchess and Prince of Cambridge hit the road and headed to Bucklebury for some quality time with Kate's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

As they pulled away from the Palace, William sat in the front seat as Kate waved to crowds from the back, where she sat with her newborn son.

After the Middletons visited Baby Cambridge on Tuesday, next up were Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles, 64, and Camilla, 66, arrived at St. Mary's Hospital's Lindo Wing around 5:25 p.m., where they were greeted by hospital staff.

The couple both waved at the media who've been camped across the road for days. Charles, with a broad smile, asked if the camera crews had been waiting long.

Carole and Michael Middleton visited the newborn for an hour and spoke briefly to the press throng outside upon exiting.

Day-old Baby Cambridge – whose name is yet to be announced – got his first visitors Tuesday when Kate's parents came to meet their grandson.

Michael and Carole Middleton arrived (in a cab) at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's hospital in London – where Kate gave birth Monday – at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

After their hour visit, they spoke briefly to the press throng outside. "He's absolutely beautiful," said his grandmother, who spoke for herself and her husband.

Normally, she's behind the scenes, away from the cameras. But when Ailsa Anderson crunched across the dusty pink gravel in front of Buckingham Palace in her three-inch heels to post the message that the world wanted to read today, she was thrust firmly into the royal baby limelight.

"It was thrilling. it's an amazing experience to be part of history and a rare honor," Anderson tells PEOPLE. "There's been a lot of calm excitement in the palace all day since the announcement that she was in hospital and people were just waiting for the good news."

Anderson, 44, is Queen Elizabeth's press secretary, tasked with making the final journey with the anxiously awaited birth notice (handed off by Prince William and Kate's press secretary Ed Perkins) and fix it on the easel for Her Majesty's subjects (and the rest of the world) to see.

For once, the much-photographed Kate and William managed to avoid the cameras, when the soon-to-be mother was driven to the hospital from Kensington Palace early Monday morning – though officials will not say if William was behind the wheel.

What they would say is that the royals arrived at St. Mary's Hospital before 6 a.m., while photographers on the scene say that the convoy was spotted around 5:30 a.m.

William and Kate and their entourage drove in two vehicles – a sedan and a town car – on side roads behind the hospital's private Lindo Wing before entering the building through the entrance to the Mary Stanford wing.

It's only two or three steps across a small sidewalk from the car to the hospital door.

Speculation around the Duchess of Cambridge's due date continues to heat up, along with the stifling temperatures currently gripping London.

Speculation reached new heights Friday, when the Daily Telegraph suggested Kate could have been due July 19 – because medical staff, a source tells the newspaper, were warned to be on best behavior – including staying off alcohol – for a month starting that day.

The royal's due date – which was the beginning of the week, PEOPLE understands – came under increased scrutiny Thursday, as focus briefly switched to a different hospital outside London: the Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading, near her parents' manor house in Bucklebury, where she has been spending time.

The mother of the Duchess of Cambridge is now in the spotlight for doing her own good deed: rescuing a missing dog.

Carole Middleton, awaiting her turn as a soon-to-be new grandmother, was driving near her home in Bucklebury when she spotted a lost dog alongside the road.

Stopping to take a look at the tag on the dog's collar, she found that it belonged to her neighbors, and so took the animal home, reported the Sunday Telegraph.
