Amy Smart: Four Pets Is a 'Full House'

Though wedded life has come easily to Amy Smart, it's presented challenges to her pets, which include two 16-year-old cats and a 9-year-old rescue dog.

"It was definitely an adjustment bringing my pets in with Slim," Smart tells PEOPLE of life with husband Carter Oosterhouse's 4-year-old bulldog. "My cats, they've grown up with my dog, but [Carter's] dog didn't really ever know cats, was never around cats."

Lucky for Slim, Smart's pair of felines have been nothing but hospitable during the adjustment process.

In Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse's marriage, the grass is always greener – in a good way.

The actress didn't even know who the HGTV carpenter was when they met. But it was an auspicious beginning. They did a project together for the Environmental Media Awards, which would turn out to be a passion for both of them.

"We got assigned to adopt a school garden together," Smart, 35, told PEOPLE Saturday at the 2011 EMA's in Burbank, Calif. "We met, and we were both in relationships, so we just remained friends. And then we both got out of relationships around the same time, a year ago this summer. And then a year later we got married."

TV handyman Carter Oosterhouse has a new project: building a life together with Amy Smart.

The pair were married Saturday in his hometown of Traverse City, Mich.

Smart walked down the aisle sparkling in 6-carat diamond and platinum chandelier earrings and a diamond and platinum bracelet from Neil Lane.

Smart and Oosterhouse, both 35, were first spotted together in January and the actress's rep confirmed in April the couple were engaged.

She's in the middle of planning the wedding of her dreams, but Amy Smart says there's no reason for her to get hung up on the details – she has her fiancé, HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse for that.

"[He's] very hands on, the actress, 35, told Hollyscoop. "He has definitely been my co-pilot with this. He has a good eye for things."

"The planning is going great," she adds. "There's way more details than I ever expected."

The couple are engaged, Smart's rep confirms to PEOPLE.

The comely couple began dating last November and were first spotted together in January, with a source telling PEOPLE at the time that they made a good match.

Amy Smart has found her own handy man: The actress is dating HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse, a source confirms PEOPLE.

The pair, both 34, were spotted stealing kisses together and looking cozy over the weekend at an Art of Elysium event in L.A.

"They have lots of common interests," says another source. "It's still pretty new, but they seem to be having a blast together."
