Doth the rep protest too much?
In the wake of Entertainment Weekly's having speculated Wednesday that Joaquin Phoenix – with the aid of his brother-in-law, Casey Affleck – was performing an elaborate ruse regarding his transition from Oscar-nominated actor to falling-off-the-stage rapper, Affleck's rep said this career switch is no hoax at all.
In a statement to PEOPLE on Thursday, the spokeswoman said, "I believe the transition from one career to another is never smooth. Unfortunately, Joaquin has had to make this transition in the spotlight of fame."

Joaquin Phoenix's New Rap Career a Hoax?
Originally posted 01/28/2009 10:30AM
Joaquin Phoenix told the world he's quitting acting. Then he took to the stage in Vegas Jan. 16 to debut his new career as a rapper. But is it all an elaborate hoax?
That's what Entertainment Weekly is reporting. Sources tell the magazine's Hollywood Insider blog that Phoenix's bizarre career change, which Casey Affleck (who's married to Phoenix's sister Summer) has been filming, is a joke at the expense of the entertainment media and actors who take themselves too seriously.
"He said, 'It's a put-on. I'm going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it,'" says one source who recently worked with Phoenix.

NEWS BRIEFS: Malaysia Muffles Mariah
Originally posted 01/20/2004 01:00AM
URGED: Mariah Carey will have to tone down her sexy act for her Feb. 22 concert in Malaysia, following complaints from Muslim opposition party leader Ahmad Sabki Yusof. "Everyone knows Mariah Carey presents herself in a sexy, unacceptable and almost vulgar manner," said Yusof, who wrote to that country's government demanding that the singer not be allowed to perform at the 50,000-seat stadium in Kuala Lampur, The New York Times reports. Carey, 33, has been granted permission, so long as she is dressed modestly, according to the BBC. Previously, rock group Linkin Park was allowed to perform in Malaysia so long as they weren't too loud and kept their shirts on.
