Nashville star Charles Esten, who plays country crooner Deacon Claybourne on the ABC show, pulled off the ultimate surprise party for his wife Patty Hanson back in March. Just how did he do it? By pretending they were attending another obligatory celebrity event.
"She was completely overcome. She had no idea," Esten told PEOPLE at the Second Harvest Fashion Show in Nashville. "I made her think we were coming to something like this … she drives in here and we pull right up to the front door and instead of everybody [on a red carpet], they said 'Surprise!' and it was her party."

In an exclusive sneak peek at this season's finale episode of Nashville, cancer-stricken Deacon (Charles Esten) is panicking about dying right before heading into a liver transplant surgery – thanks to a donation from his sister Beverly (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) – that could potentially save his life.

Calling all Nashville fans! PEOPLE sat down with Charles Esten, who plays the charming rebel Deacon Claybourne at the Nashville Live show at New York City's Beacon Theatre and discovered (not surprisingly) that he doesn't save his charm for the small screen – he makes us swoon in real life too!

Except for his musical chops, Nashville star Chip Esten has little in common with his tortured, alcoholic singer-songwriter alter ego Deacon Claybourne. But one thing they share is a singular devotion to the women in their life, the actor tells PEOPLE.

Sure, Nashville's a show that isn't afraid of a little soapy drama (and it's one of the reasons we love it!). But underneath all that Hollywood-crafted heartbreak and twangst, there's a fundamental respect for the Music City credo that "three chords and the truth will set you free."

In an exclusive clip from the Music City soap's winter premiere on Wednesday, Luke pays a visit to Rayna's ex Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten). Given the longstanding rivalry between the two men, it's just a matter of moments before things get physical. Actually, seconds: 26 to be precise.
After Rayna jilted him, Luke took his anger out on several reception chairs. But his reaction to Deacon's claim that he didn't play a part in the split is positively nasty: "It's always been about you – every damn day since you two met. I should have known better than to go sniffin' around that b----."

Every week, a member of the Nashville cast will blog about the latest episode of the ABC hit. This week, Will Chase – who plays Luke Wheeler – writes about being the other man in the complicated life of Rayna Jaymes.
It's funny. Even with Deacon (Charles Esten) and all of his demons, fans demonize Luke, who has done absolutely nothing wrong. Like, I'm not a freakin' mess! I'm not a bad guy!
Deacon keeps coming and will keep coming. I think Rayna (Connie Britton) might feel a little bit like she's selling out. I like that it's messy rather than it being a maniacal mustache-twirling thing. Even with Deacon's faults, it doesn't mean he can't be good for Rayna. Fans are pretty outspoken with their love for that relationship.
