If you're a Hollywood star, your childhood friends usually have a limited number of roles available to play. They can be a loyal sidekick, your crew's comical mascot, or maybe the personal assistant who will eventually take you down in a bloodless celebrity coup.
But for a lucky few stars, the people they grew up with became celebrities themselves, with their own fans, their own love interests and their own trending topics.
It must be a welcome surprise. After all, it's lonely at the top, but it's a little less lonely when your childhood friends are there, too.
In honor of International Friendship Day – commonly celebrated on the first Sunday in August – we're rounding up the celeb pairs who have known each other since before they were famous.

No one was more stunned than Cher when she recently found out Dancing with the Stars will pay tribute to her decades-long music career on the Nov. 4 show.
"It's always strange when people do something like this. You're not thinking about those kinds of things," she tells PEOPLE. "It just always takes me by surprise. It just does."
Cher will sing her hit "Believe" and her new song "Closer To The Truth" on the show, as well as serve as a guest judge, but won't be dancing because of a foot injury she sustained years ago. "I am waiting to have an operation," she says. "The doctor got a little crankier and said I have to do it."
Even if she could dance today, you won't find Cher dancing on DWTS as a contestant. "Aren't I old enough now not to be a contestant anymore?" the singer, 67, says. "Haven't I got past the contestant part?"

How does Cher keep up with her demanding schedule and still manage to look so good at 67?
"I kill myself!" she told PEOPLE at a recent party to promote Closer to the Truth, her 26th solo album, at Tao Downtown, where she caught up with old friends and posed for pictures with some of the many drag queens in attendance.
The singer, who recently went blond, spent a whirlwind week promoting the album in New York City, including a stop by Late Night with David Letterman, and plans to embark on her 49-city Dressed to Kill tour in March, at the age of 67 years young.
"I think I'm some freak of nature," she joked. "I'm starting to believe it myself."

Chaz Bono is giving the skinny on his nearly year-long weight loss journey.
"I just feel much more comfortable in my skin now," the former Dancing with the Stars contestant says on Wednesday's episode of The Doctors. "Everything is easier, everything physically is easier, everything feels better and emotionally I just feel more comfortable, more confident."

Almost a year after taking on a weight loss journey that began last November, Chaz Bono proves he's nowhere near giving up.
Cher's son, 44 – who told PEOPLE in May, "I really like what I see in the mirror" – showed an even slimmer physique this week, wearing a fedora and a T-shirt while taking a leisurely stroll.
Shortly after kicking off his public mission to lose at least 50 lbs., he said the plan was challenging because there were still things he missed eating. But as time progressed, those feelings were a thing of the past.

Finding the perfect role can be difficult for any actor. But it was nearly impossible for Chaz Bono, whose dream growing up was to act.
"I started acting in high school. It was the career that I wanted but I stopped because I couldn't really do a good job playing female characters and I didn't know why," Bono tells PEOPLE of life before he transitioned from being a woman to a man in 2009.
It was actually the first time Bono, 44, played a man on stage that convinced him to give up his goal.

Chaz Bono is a changed man.
The LGBT activist showed off a much different side at Tuesday night's Dancing with the Stars's 300th anniversary celebration, compared to when he competed on the show in 2011.
"I'm feeling really good," the once-timid son of Cher told PEOPLE at the Boulevard 3-held event in Hollywood. "I'd love to do Dancing all over again. I'd do it much better now than I did it then."

Georgia Holt has never been a particularly preachy type of mother, especially when it comes to doling out words of wisdom to her kids, insists her oldest daughter, Cher.
"She never gave me and my sister [actress Georganne LaPiere Bartylak] advice because, truthfully, she knew we'd never take it," admits the iconic entertainer, 66. "Instead, we learned about life by listening to her talk about the things she did wrong and the things she did right." Holt's journey from a rural Arkansas girl to an aspiring starlet in Los Angeles is captured in Lifetime's May 6 one-hour special Dear Mom, Love Cher.
The intimate documentary will unleash the plucky 86-year-old onto the world – but her daughter isn't ready for her full pop culture immersion. "I won't allow her on Twitter," says Cher. "I have no filter, and neither does she!"
