The star, whose new Netflix talk show Chelsea debuts on May 11, told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle recently that she easily decided against throwing her name in the ring for one of the previously up-for-grab network late night hosting positions (like The Late Late Show).
"It's flattering, but you know what? I was so sick of being asked the question, 'What is it like to be a female in late night?' that I wanted to take that question out of the equation," she explained. "Now I'm the only person in history that has a talk show that's launching in 190 countries, so the question isn't about me being a woman anymore. It's about being the first person to do that on this scale."
Chelsea Handler on the Death of Her Big Brother When She Was 9 – and How His Loss Ultimately Became a 'Beautiful Gift' for Her Family

Handler, who grew up the youngest of six siblings, lost her brother Chet in 1984 when she was just 9 years old. The eldest Handler sibling died after he fell off a cliff in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
"Seeing your parents fall apart is really rough," Handler, 41, told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle. "I wouldn't wish it on anybody."
"As hard as it was for me or for my brothers or sisters – [how did it feel] for my parents to have your own child in danger in that way? And then you can't protect them and you couldn't save them?"
"In hindsight it really kept us as a tight-knit group, because it was so tragic and awful," she says. "Ultimately, it was kind of a beautiful gift because we all value each other so much."

[ YOUTUBE "GnuIHgGx40o"] Chelsea Handler says her, ahem, assets weren't up to standard for E!
While the former Chelsea Lately headliner promoted her new Netflix show Chelsea on Tuesday's Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon broached the topic of Handler's departure from the entertainment network.
"I want to know two things: One is, you have this show on E! You're the biggest name on E!" Fallon began – but Handler quickly cut him off: "Was I the biggest name on E!?"
Replied Fallon, "That wasn't a Kardashian? Yeah, I think so."
Handler, 41, quipped, "I didn't have a big enough ass to stay on that network."
