Over more than 30 years on the air, David Letterman went from the class clown of late night to one of its most respected icons.
In the '80s, Letterman's Midwestern snark and ironic sensibilities were considered groundbreaking in the comparatively staid world of Johnny Carson and Tom Snyder; now they've provided the groundwork for many of today's mainstream comedy trends. (Check out Letterman's 9 Most Unforgettable Late Show Moments.)
As Letterman prepares to step away from the desk for good in 2015, here's a look back at the 10 (could it have been any other number?) best things Letterman gave us:

The ballroom was full of positive energy on Monday night, as Cher took over judging duties for Len Goodman on Dancing with the Stars.
At the end of the night, which was themed around the Burlesque star, Bill Engvall and Emma Slater ended up with the lowest score of 24 points out of 30 for their fun-filled disco to "Strong Enough."

Corbin Bleu is a former High School Musical star who is competing on season 17 of Dancing with the Stars with season 13 champion Karina Smirnoff. The Disney alum will blog for PEOPLE about his experience on ABC's hit show.
I?m relieved last week is over! We were so excited about the Game of Thrones dance from the previous week and then we ended up with lower scores. This time we really honed in on all the technique and making sure there was no lift or semi-lift and we received high scores. We were excited.
Nicole's elimination was nuts! It goes to show you never know what's going to happen. It's all about the votes. Nicole has a very large fan base with all of her Jersey Shore people, so it was definitely a shocker. It reminds me you have to just enjoy the opportunity every week.

Karina Smirnoff is a former Dancing with the Stars champion, winning the coveted mirror-ball trophy in season 13 with J.R. Martinez. The longtime competitor will blog for PEOPLE.com about competing with former High School Musical star Corbin Bleu in season 17.
It was such a shock to see Nicole get eliminated. She did such a fantastic job on the show. And you got to see Nicole as the mother. The way she loves her baby is awesome. She's so real, but at this point it would be really difficult to see anyone leave. You usually know who's leaving and who's staying by mid-season, but it's been so unpredictable. It's a very tough season.
Corbin and I were freaking out when we had bad scores and not the best dance. We were like,'That's it. We're going home.' It's like full-on panic. We take it so personal and so emotional and you start freaking out when the red like comes on. Corbin and I we're swaying from left to right because it?s so difficult to stand still.

No one was more stunned than Cher when she recently found out Dancing with the Stars will pay tribute to her decades-long music career on the Nov. 4 show.
"It's always strange when people do something like this. You're not thinking about those kinds of things," she tells PEOPLE. "It just always takes me by surprise. It just does."
Cher will sing her hit "Believe" and her new song "Closer To The Truth" on the show, as well as serve as a guest judge, but won't be dancing because of a foot injury she sustained years ago. "I am waiting to have an operation," she says. "The doctor got a little crankier and said I have to do it."
Even if she could dance today, you won't find Cher dancing on DWTS as a contestant. "Aren't I old enough now not to be a contestant anymore?" the singer, 67, says. "Haven't I got past the contestant part?"

The Voice contestants brought their A-game to the second night of battle rounds Tuesday. Yet it was coach Cee Lo Green who provided the most drama of the night – thanks to a single button push.
Green firmly hit his button in the final moments of the show to save soul singer Monika Leigh, a Team Blake Shelton member who had just lost her battle against Louisiana father Ray Boudreaux.
The two delivered a powerful version of "Some Kind of Wonderful," but Shelton – who received some help from guest mentor Cher during rehearsals – ultimately chose Boudreaux, 25.

Call them Baby Beyoncés.
Two teenage vocalists tore up the stage diva-style Monday night on The Voice, delivering an impassioned and mature version of Beyoncé's ballad "Listen."
Their youth and sheer talent on the first night of the show's battle rounds brought coach Christina Aguilera to tears.
"If I was up and coming on the scene I would be scared of you guys right now," Aguilera told Houston's Amber Nicole, 17, and San Diego's Timyra-Joi, 15.
