The premiere of Fox's The X Factor on Wednesday night was peculiar when it came to the judges' table – featuring segments with both Cheryl Cole and Nicole Scherzinger, even though Scherzinger replaced Cole months ago.
Cole, 28, was dismissed from the singing show in May, many weeks after filming began, but the show aired some of her judging anyway during its premiere, giving viewers a chance to compare the two. And some critics are wondering if Simon Cowell made the right choice by switching.
"[Cole] just kind of disappears midshow, without much explanation, and suddenly Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls is in her chair. It's a downgrade," Neil Genzlinger writes in The New York Times.

The X Factor arrived on Fox Wednesday night like a bumblebee alighting on a pussy willow.
The bumblebee was the size of a food truck.
The much-hyped, heavily anticipated singing competition, which first began in England, was exactly what the previews indicated it would be and what Simon Cowell intended it to be: a show to out-idol American Idol, out-voice The Voice and outdo any other conceivable reality show. Cowell doesn't have to reinvent the wheel here: Just ramp things up.
The two-hour premiere, a night of auditions, looked expensive – you could have fit the home tree from Avatar on the blue-lighted Los Angeles stage – with the ultimate prize of a $5 million contract for the winner, either solo singer or group, age 12 and up.

The X Factor is all about finding the next big breakthrough star. But Simon Cowell's upcoming Fox show has had enough trouble finding the right lineup of judges.
Reports Thursday morning say Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger is replacing British performer Cheryl Cole as a judge. While some think she was fired, the Sun suggests she was simply homesick.
"It hasn't worked out," a source tells the paper. "She's homesick and wants to return to the U.K. She's had enough. Whether she ends up back on U.K. X Factor is open to speculation."
