Superheroes have it easy: We only expect them to save the planet every now and again. Superhero movies, though, have the daunting task of illuminating our souls.

Dazzling effects, strong stories and bold heroes mean bubkes unless they inspire us. Thank the gods, The Avengers is just what it ought to be – inspired.

After five recent films about the solo exploits of Marvel heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, outclassing Edward Norton), The Avengers weaves its narrative threads into a vibrant display of effects wizardry with characters to love and wit to spare.

In real-life, Robert Downey Jr. doesn't possess superhuman strength, genius intellect or that famed power suit.

But Iron Man, his on-screen Avengers alter-ego gifted with his body, brains and superhero wardrobe, isn't lacking – and fans of the franchise agree.

According to data collected on the movie's Facebook page, 37 percent of fans polled would most like to be Iron Man (identity: Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark) if they could transform into any Marvel superhero.

Chris Hemsworth Caresses Comatose Kristen Stewart in Snow White & the Huntsman Clip

"What would you give to see her again?"

That's the eerie question asked by the evil Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) when Huntsman Chris Hemsworth sees his protégé Snow White, felled by the Queen's poison apple, in the new trailer for Snow White & the Huntsman.

It's just about the only time Snow White (Kristen Stewart) stops fighting: this incarnation of the fabled beauty befriends terrifying monsters, dives off cliffs and expertly wields a sword. She even wears armor on the Snow White & the Huntsman soundtrack cover, striking a pensive pose as warring knights clash behind her. (The soundtrack's first single, "Breath of Life," by Florence + The Machine, can be heard in the clip above.)

While in Rome to promote their movie, the cast of The Avengers stopped into Antica Pesa, a restaurant that has been family-owned for three generations, to enjoy a meal together.

Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston dined on buffalo mozzarella, homemade prosciutto, breadsticks and grilled zucchini with goat cheese, before digging into two types of homemade pasta – one with tomato and bacon and one with cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper).

After that, they shared a course of grilled beef with spinach and rosemary potatoes.

Finally, for dessert, the movie stars indulged in – what else? – Italian cheesecake.

No awkwardness here!

Lauren Conrad had a pleasant conversation with ex Derek Hough during a night out at Beacher's Madhouse in Hollywood. The designer was fairly reserved, dancing occasionally to the music. But she seemed giddy when he approached her table around midnight, giving him a huge hug hello and touching his face with her hands. Though they were friendly throughout the evening, an onlooker says, "It didn't appear like they were rekindling anything romantically."

Also at the show: Miley Cyrus, who spent her night dirty dancing with her beau Liam Hemsworth. Before she arrived, the Aussie actor started his evening enjoying some quality time at the club with brother Chris Hemsworth. And Joe Jonas took in the show with his usual posse of guy friends.

Twilight fans might be sad that the five-part series wrapped filming in July, but the saga's star Kristen Stewart is excited about her next role.

"I've had the most indulgent experience on Snow White and the Huntsman so far," the actress, 21, who plays the title character, told reporters at L.A.'s Breaking Dawn – Part 1 premiere on Monday. "We had a lot of pre-production and I really got close with the director [Rupert Sanders] and [costar] Chris [Hemsworth] and everything, so I'm having a great time!"

And Stewart wants to make one thing clear: She doesn't feel like she needed much of a break before diving back into a starring role again.

Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth Shoot Snow White and the Huntsman

Kristen Stewart may play the "fairest of them all," but based on the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer and new photos from the set, she's clearly not afraid to get dirty.

In fact, shooting more scenes in Surrey, England, Thursday, Stewart and costar Chris Hemsworth make village life look like it suits them – especially since Hemsworth's ax-wielding Huntsman isn't pursuing Stewart's Snow White through the dark forest.

Snow White and the Huntsman, which is not yet rated, hits theaters June 1, 2012.
