For the first time this season, the judges of So You Think You Can Dance had no control over who was sent home.
"You can breathe a sigh of relief and sit back and enjoy," host Cat Deeley told the panel on Wednesday's episode, which would determine, based on America's vote from the previous week, the final four of season 9.
But there was no sighing for the panel of Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge Christina Applegate.
"It's nice to save someone. It's nice to have that feeling and be able to do that but it was America's choice tonight," Applegate told PEOPLE after Wednesday's show.

Christina Applegate knows what Giuliana Rancic is going through, and says she'll be there if the E! host – who has breast cancer – ever wants to talk.
"I know what that phone call sounds like and feels like," Applegate, 39, herself a breast-cancer survivor, tells E! Online. "I hope she knows that I'm here if she wants to ever talk about it."
Still, Applegate, who was declared cancer-free after a double mastectomy in 2008, realizes the sensitive nature of the topic, and wouldn't presume to give unsolicited advice.

With just one elimination before the So You Think You Can Dance finale, emotions were high and tears flowed freely as the women shined and the men fell flat on Wednesday's episode.
Melanie Moore and all-star Twitch opened the show with a Little Red Riding Hood-inspired hip-hop routine that left guest judge Christina Applegate saying, "You give me hope. You take us on a journey."
"I'm not a hip-hop dancer at all, so I was just so vulnerable in that state. Just to hear her give such nice comments – that's just what I wanted," Moore told reporters of being moved to tears by Applegate's comments.
Next up was an emotional contemporary routine featuring Sasha Mallory and season 6 finalist Kent that had both Mallory and the judges in tears.

The moments after childbirth were extraordinarily profound for Christina Applegate, who dropped her defenses and pulled daughter Sadie to her chest, a part of her body that she's kept closely guarded since her double mastectomy in 2008.
"I dropped my gown, which I don't do," the Hall Pass star, 39, says in an interview airing Tuesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "This part of my body [her chest] is very private to me ... that's a real private place. A place that I don't have a good relationship with, let's say. But at that moment of pulling her out, I just tore that [gown] off."
It was a sign of just how open she was to her new daughter. "There's a room full of people that I don't know. Nurses and doctors," says Applegate – this week's PEOPLE cover girl, along with Sadie. "And she and I just lay there. It was the best thing that's ever happened to me."

"I felt my heart literally open up for the first time and like wrap itself around her. It was profound," Applegate, 39, tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. "And I'm more in love with her every minute of the day."
Back home in the L.A. house she shares with musician fiancé Martyn LeNoble, 41, Applegate has been relishing motherhood. "I want to be the ultimate burper and diaper-changer, I want to be the ultimate at all of it," she says.
