Anne Hathaway, Clint Eastwood Named Year's Best by Film Board
Originally posted 12/04/2008 04:25PM
Small proved big with the National Board of Review, which named Anne Hathaway 2008's best actress for her role in the indie movie Rachel Getting Married and the art film Slumdog Millionaire best picture of the year.
Clint Eastwood was cited as top actor for his role as a grouchy widower in the still-to-be released Gran Torino, while The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, was singled out for its direction, by David Fincher.
Slumdog Millionaire, about an Indian man who wins a fortune on a TV show, additionally took awards for breakthrough performance by an actor – Dev Patel – and for screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, who tied with Benjamin Button writer Eric Roth for best adapted screenplay.
Comprised of film historians, experts and buffs, the National Board of Review was founded in 1909. On Thursday, its 125 members helped kick off awards season by naming their selection of the year's best.
In the supporting actor categories, the board honored John Brolin for his role as the assassin Dan White in Milk, and Penelope Cruz in Woody Allen's romantic comedy Victoria Cristina Barcelona. Best animated feature was Wall-E.

Originally posted 10/28/2008 08:55AM
She may be the most photographed woman in the world. But even Angelina Jolie can fly under the radar.
The actress – who recently returned from a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan – made a surprise appearance at Monday night's Hollywood Film Festival Awards Gala, where she payed tribute to director Clint Eastwood.
In fact, Jolie's appearance was so unexpected, the A-list crowd gasped audibly when she was introduced.
The mother-of-six took time out of her busy schedule to present Eastwood – who helmed her most recent move, The Changeling – with the director of the year award.
"There are some people in this business that are icons, and we often wonder if, when we meet them, they'll live up to what we imagine them to be," she told the audience. "And Clint Eastwood in person is even better."

Of Angelina Jolie – the leading lady in his latest directorial effort, the period drama Changeling – Eastwood, 78, says: "I've always admired her talent. She's somewhat hampered sometimes by having this gorgeous face, the most gorgeous face on the planet. She's on covers and all that stuff.
"But," Eastwood told veteran movie journalist Lillian Ross at a Saturday Q&A sponsored by the New Yorker magazine at the Directors Guild of America, "she is a great talent, and it would be easy to overlook that, except after seeing this you realize that she is this great, talented person."
