Harry Potter can sure deliver a crowd. The theater community packed into Broadway's Broadhurst on Thursday night to watch Daniel Radcliffe's gala opening night in Equus.

Glenn Close, Lili Taylor and The Sixth Sense's Haley Joel Osment were among the those in the crowd for the much-anticipated revival of Peter Shaffer's drama about a young man with a pathological fascination with horses.

Osment, who himself is starring in upcoming Broadway revival – of David Mamet's 1976 American Buffalo – told PEOPLE, "I'm happy to be here supporting another great work of theater. It's a great season for Broadway."

Daniel Radcliffe is gearing up for his official Broadway debut Thursday night in Equus at the Broadhurst Theater – and says being onstage is tough work.

"There's a lot of sweat on me by the end [of the show]," Radcliffe, 19, tells USA Today. "I'm a physically repellent thing. At least it's good exercise. I don't have to go to the gym."

Another perk for the Harry Potter star, who began his Equus preview performances Sept. 5: His new schedule – including rehearsals and mostly evening performances – allows him "to lie in bed much later than I do in London, which is great."

It's only the second day previews for Broadway's Equus, but Daniel Radcliffe has made it clear he loves his new home.

"I love New York very much, yes! Everyone's been wonderful," said Radcliffe after his Saturday performance of the Peter Shaffer play at the Broadhurst Theater in New York.

Putting to rest any doubts that his move from the show's original West End, London, locale to N.Y.C was difficult, Radcliffe was emphatic: "I love Broadway!"

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says taking the stage in Equus "has given me a little more confidence" – and his nude scene is no big deal.

"It's only seven minutes at the end of the play," Radcliffe, 19, told the audience at an Aug. 19 talk held by the New York Times.

The actor is in New York rehearsing for his Broadway debut in Equus, which begins previews Sept. 5, after starring in the play in London last year. Performing live "was amazing," Radcliffe said. "As long as it goes well, you can't stop smiling."

Radcliffe also said he had some brief hesitations about continuing his role as Harry Potter (the sixth movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is due out next summer). "It would have been really hard to see someone else [play Harry Potter]. Especially if he was very good – that would kill me!"

Nude Daniel Radcliffe to Hit Broadway

Just after revealing his new mustache – for a role as Rudyard Kipling's son in PBS's My Boy Jack, airing April 20 – Daniel Radcliffe is getting ready to unveil much more. Everything, in fact.

The Harry Potter star, 18, is preparing for his Broadway debut in the transfer of the London revival of Peter Shaffer's psychological stage drama Equus, which took the West End by storm when it opened in February 2007 – thanks to, among several reasons, Radcliffe's nearly 10-minute nude scene.

Radcliffe's role as a tortured teen in the show will go on view this fall for 22 weeks, Reuters reports. Previews begin Sept. 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre, with an official opening night of Sept. 25, say producers.

As for Radcliffe, he recently expressed some anxiety to Reuters about starring in the Big Apple. "It will be amazing," he said, "but I will be terrified because I was talking to [costar] Richard Griffiths about playing New York, and he said the most stupid thing you can do is underestimate New York audiences."

The Harry Potter star, 18, continues to broaden his acting horizons, this time playing teen soldier Jack Kipling, the only son of writer Rudyard Kipling, in My Boy Jack, and PEOPLE got a sneak preview pic of Radcliffe in uniform. (The film, costarring Kim Cattrall, airs April 20, 9 p.m., on PBS's Masterpiece Classic.)

My, how they've grown. From left, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Harry Potter himself (Daniel Radcliffe) begin their sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment in the film series, due to open in theaters Nov. 21.

In it, Harry happens upon an ancient book mysteriously marked "Property of the Half-Blood Prince" – which helps the trio learn more about evil wizard Lord Voldemort's dark past.

Last week, it was also learned that the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling's series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, will be divided into two movie installments. Muggles, rejoice!

Daniel Radcliffe is among several major names donating their old eyeglasses to an exhibit honoring victims of the Holocaust.

The Harry Potter, 18, isn't giving away his famous wizard character spectacles – but his first pair of glasses, an oval, metal-framed pair from when he was 6.

Other stars donating glasses to the artwork, which is inspired by a famous WWII picture of a mountain of spectacles confiscated from Holocaust victims and is part of National Holocaust Memorial Day, include Yoko Ono, Stephen Fry, Jerry Springer, Paul O'Grady and Ronnie Corbett.
