Julia's Romantic Night Out
Originally posted 03/01/2005 06:00AM
While all of Hollywood was in high gear prepping for the Academy Awards last week, Julia Roberts – an Oscar presenter – was kicking back with husband Danny Moder, enjoying a casual dinner out (without their newborn twins, Finn and Hazel) at Orlando's, a local eatery near their ranch in Taos, N.Mex. A casually dressed Roberts – who ordered one of her favorites: a chicken taco salad, avocado on the side, hold the onions – hugged her cameraman hubby several times during the meal and leaned over at one point to give him a smooch on the cheek. Though word of the Closer star's presence spread throughout the restaurant, fans didn't approach her table directly. Instead, "Everyone was heading to the rest room," which required passing by her table, says a spy. As the happy couple, who turned down dessert but took a quesadilla to go, made their way out, "She turned and waved and said, 'Thanks'" to the kitchen staff, and wished them a good evening, our spy reports.

Twice As Nice

Last winter, while filming Closer – a drama costarring Natalie Portman and Jude Law – in London, Julia Roberts seemed closer than ever to husband Danny Moder. When he wasn't there, "Julia was adorable missing him," recalls producer Cary Brokaw. But Brokaw adds that Moder often visited the set, much to the star's delight: "They're great together," he says. "She's incredibly demonstrative in her love and affection for him." Roberts never let on that she and her husband were planning a pregnancy in the immediate future, but something, clearly, was up. "There was a sense of it," says Brokaw, "but she always has a glow."

WEEK IN REVIEW: Why Julia's So Happy
Originally posted 07/26/2002 01:00AM
JULIA'S JOY: Julia Roberts broke her silence on her secret July 4 wedding to cameraman Daniel Moder, whom she called "a man among men, unselfish and all-encompassing." The star, 34, speaking to Diane Sawyer on ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday, said that she and Moder, 33, were fated to be mated. "I hope that there are people who agree that I have done some good, kind things in my life, but to really, ultimately, stand fully in a moment of realizing that I was born to love and to be the wife of this man," she said. She also conceded that Moder's previous wife (of four years), makeup artist Vera Moder, had been reluctant to give Danny a divorce and called the situation "terribly complicated."

Julia Roberts has broken her silence on her secret July 4 wedding to cameraman Daniel Moder, whom she called "a man among men, unselfish and all-encompassing." The star, 34, speaking to Diane Sawyer on ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday, said that she and Moder, 33, were fated to be mated. "I hope that there are people who agree that I have done some good, kind things in my life, but to really, ultimately, stand fully in a moment of realizing that I was born to love and to be the wife of this man," she said. She also conceded that Moder's previous wife (of four years), makeup artist Vera Moder, had been reluctant to give Danny a divorce and called the situation "terribly complicated." Roberts was coming off her own four-year relationship, with actor Benjamin Bratt. (Bratt, 38, married actress Talisa Soto, 35, earlier this year.) "I figure he is kind of making his choices," Roberts said of her old boyfriend, "so all the better, because he was unhappy and he left and moved along and found happiness in a place where there aren't any mosquitoes." As for becoming a mother, Roberts said that she and Moder "want to have a family, and we will have a family in due course. And whether it's a gaggle . . . I don't know. It'll be great."

Hideaway Bride

Her friends thought they were gathering for a late-night drink. Some would probably have preferred to just hit the hay. After all, July 3 had already been a full day: In the past 24 hours 60 or so family members and close pals, answering an invitation to "celebrate Independence Day," had boarded planes in Manhattan, Atlanta and L.A., en route to Julia Roberts's 82-acre ranch in Taos, N.Mex. In 86° heat they had passed hours chatting by the pool, playing football and basketball and eating homemade turkey Roberts had cooked up that afternoon. When, come nightfall, some mentioned going to sleep, Roberts simply urged them to "hang around," says a pal.

As She Likes It

No one does happy better than Julia Roberts. And at the Opium Gardens nightclub in Miami Beach last month, the girl in the jeans and pigtails was downright giddy: giggling, gabbing and generally glowing. One minute she was drinking Jack Daniel's with a group of pals, the next she was dancing with a buff blond in khakis and a T-shirt. The fact that he wasn't exactly light on his feet didn't seem to bother Roberts; the two partied until they left together at 5:30 a.m. "They were holding hands, kissing," says a witness. As they were over a shared bowl of chicken soup at the Cuban restaurant Puerto Sagua a day or so later. "They were quietly talking," says waiter Roberto Lazo. "They were very romantic." Right up until her beau left $15 in cash on the table and headed out with Roberts for some afternoon window-shopping, leaving fellow diners to ponder whether a 33-year-old cameraman named Danny Moder might be, finally, The One.
