David Nail Lived 10 Years in 'Deep Depression'

David Nail made a name for himself in country music with heartbreak ballads like his 2011 hit "Let It Rain," but the truth was, the singer's real life was far more painful than his lyrics.

"I lived probably 10 years in a really, really deep depression," the Kennett, Mo., native, 34, tells PEOPLE Country. "Growing up in a small town, it was one of those things that you don't talk about and you try to sweep it under the rug."

David Nail Breaks Finger Playing Softball with Carrie Underwood

He was just lending his hand to a worthy cause.

But country star David Nail left Saturday's City of Hope celebrity softball game, which raises money for the cancer institute, with a broken finger.

"Gonna be one handed for a while!" he Tweeted post-game, following a trip to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center – he thanked the "Vandy ER" in his Tweet – where the singer-guitarist's right hand was treated.

He added, "Thanks for the concern, this is a lesson to not play like you're 18 when you're 33! Fingers crossed for no nerve damage."
