18 Years Ago, Ross and Rachel First Kissed on Friends

Originally posted 11/09/2013 03:00PM

This weekend marks the anniversary of a very special episode of Friends, aptly titled "The One Where Ross Finds Out," which first aired on Nov. 9, 1995.

A little background: When the second season began, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) showed up at the airport to tell Ross (David Schwimmer) his romantic feelings were requited, but soon discovered he was dating fellow paleontologist Julie.

By this episode, Rachel resolves to move on and lets Monica fix her up. The world's worst date ensues, during which Rachel chugs wine and obsesses over Ross and Julie. An intoxicated Rachel then proceeds to aggressively borrow another diner's giant cellphone (reminder: this was 1995) and leave a humiliating message on Ross's answering machine, proclaiming she's "over him."

Actresses from both sides of the pond were honored at an event paying tribute to Women in Film Thursday, as part of the Cannes Film Festival.

Naomi Watts, Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger, Shailene Woodley and French actress Ludivine Sagnier were the special guests at the event, held at the private mansion Villa St. George and sponsored by Calvin Klein. Chastain and Woodley danced the night away around a candlelit pool, still on their feet past midnight, according to the Associated Press.

Celebrities including David Schwimmer and Chris Rock also attended the event.

Alec Baldwin, in town with fianceé Hilaria Thomas, was also a major presence at the party, a source tells PEOPLE. The actor, who's show 30 Rock will wrap next season, joked to a party guest, "I'm going to be out of work soon, so I'm making all the friends I can."

It was a reunion of old (and news) pals when Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer gathered for the photo call for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes.

"Schwim," Rock (who plays Marty the zebra) yelled when arriving at the same time as his Melman the giraffe costar. But it was Stiller who unknowingly doubled up on "Schwim" as his Alex the lion character photo-bombed the two as they made their way down the Croisette.

It's been two years since Central Perk served its last latte, which means that right about now, Ross and Rachel, toddler Emma in tow, would probably be joining Chandler and Monica in the 'burbs. RATED: Sunday's season finale of ABC's Desperate Housewives attracted a record 30.3 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings. The new high beats the numbers for the Nov. 28 episode (about Mrs. Huber's death) by some 3 million. Even so, shows that did even better during this Sweeps period also included season finale for CBS's CSI (30.7 million) and the series finale of Everybody Loves Raymond (32.9 million). As for Desperate Housewives, the hopes are high for season two this fall. Joining the cast as a regular, Variety reports, will be Roger Bart, who this past season occasionally cropped up as pharmacist George Williams, who developed a crush on Bree (Marcia Cross) … and fatally tampered with her husband Rex's pills.

Judge to Tom Sizemore: Kick Drugs or Die

Originally posted 02/25/2005 08:00AM

CAUTIONED: A California judge gave Tom Sizemore a break Thursday when he let the 43-year-old actor remain free pending his sentencing next month for a probation violation, the Associated Press reports. Sizemore faces up to four and a half years in jail resulting from an altercation with his former girlfriend, onetime Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss. The judge let Sizemore stay out of jail, despite the fact that the troubled actor has failed seven drug tests, twice admitted methamphetamine use, and failed to show up for drug testing all within the past month. But the jurist had some harsh words for the actor: "There are two ways for you to go," Judge Antonio Barretto Jr. told Sizemore. "One is to recover. The other is to die."
