Nothing like a room full of tough guys to help keep your emotions in check.
"It was very emotional," Denis Leary tells PEOPLE of shooting the series finale of Rescue Me at a screening of the episode Wednesday night in Manhattan. "But I couldn't really cry there. There were firefighters there ... it wasn't one of those things where you could cry if you were a guy."
It was a different story for Leary's costar Callie Thorne. "It was really traumatic for me to think about not seeing these people every day," she says of wrapping the post-9/11 firefighter drama. "I loved this family so much. I don't even want to admit that it's over!"
But before it was over for good, the cast, crew, and scores of FDNY bid farewell to the series at the finale party. The guests of honor? More than 30 firefighters who responded on 9/11.

Denis Leary says he's been misquoted and misunderstood.
The comic actor sparked a firestorm of criticism, even among his Hollywood colleagues, for a passage in his new book Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid saying that autism diagnoses "help explain away the deficiencies of (parents') junior morons."
"The point of the chapter is not that autism doesn't exist – it obviously does," Leary, 51, says in a statement. He says his beef is with "grown men who are either self-diagnosing themselves with low-level offshoots of the disease or wishing they could as a way to explain their failed careers and troublesome progeny."

Famously blond Denis Leary has a surprising new look.
"When I see people they go, 'What's going on with your hair?' " the Rescue Me star, 50, told PEOPLE at the Leary Firefighter's Foundation Bash for New York's Bravest on Tuesday. "And I'm going, 'What?' I think they mean my hair's messed up."
It's not. It's just suddenly brunette for the movie he and Kevin Spacey are shooting: Recount, about the 2000 presidential election.

With a little help from natural foods chef Bethenny Frankel, who whips up healthy meals in his trailer, PEOPLE reports in its latest issue. "As you can imagine, tofu isn't the first priority," says Frankel, who always prepares food with "something green." The verdict? "I love them all," says Leary.
