Hospital Fined Over Quaid Babies' Overdose
Originally posted 03/21/2008 10:00AM
Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has been fined $25,000 by the California Department of Public Health on Thursday in the matter of giving overdoses of a blood thinner to three infants, including the newborn twins of Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly.
In all, 11 hospitals were fined for violations that caused or were "likely to cause, serious injury or death to patients," the Associated Press reports.
Cedars spokesman Richard Elbaum said the facility cooperated with state authorities and intends to pay the fine. The hospital has since apologized to the patients' families and said it has taken steps to better train staff to staff.

Originally posted 02/20/2008 01:25PM
With his 3-month-old twins, Thomas and Zoe, "doing fine, doing great," and his 15-year-old son Jack savoring the role of big brother, Dennis Quaid is one happy family man.
Also added to this domestic mix is the 2-year-old girl who Quaid's ex-wife, Meg Ryan, adopted in China, the star of the new movie Vantage Point tells USA Today.
"He's very bonded to Daisy," says Quaid of Jack, admitting that he too has gotten to know Daisy "a little bit" himself. "It's fantastic for Jack having a little brother and sisters now. He really wanted to have a little brother, and I really wanted to have a little girl, so we all got what we wanted."

Sundance Wrap-Up: Quaid, Farrell Save the Day
Originally posted 01/28/2008 11:00AM
The festival's over and the swag suites are now closed. PEOPLE Movie Critic Leah Rozen weighs in on the best and worst from this year's Sundance:
Like wine vintages, some years at film festivals are better than others. This year's Sundance Film Festival was by general consensus a lackluster one.
Some 120 features screened during the 10-day festival, which concluded on Saturday (for a complete list of winners, click here). Of these, many highly anticipated commercial entries were washouts, while smaller films that scored with audiences and critics mostly have limited commercial prospects.
Among the biggest disappointments were three films with show business settings and starring big names: What Just Happened?, The Great Buck Howard and The Deal. All three are still seeking distributors.

The Quaids Describe Twins' Hospital Nightmare
Originally posted 01/15/2008 06:30AM
Actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly have spoken out for the first time since their newborn twins were hospitalized following a medication error. Two months after the incident, the two still question Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's handling of the accidental overdose.
Perhaps most shockingly, the parents – whose twins Zoe and Boone were born Nov. 8 to a gestational carrier – claim the hospital kept them in the dark for hours about the potentially fatal medication error.
"Our kids could have been dying, and we wouldn't have been able to come down to the hospital to say goodbye," the actor, 53, told the Los Angeles Times Tuesday.

Regulators: Hospital Put Dennis Quaid's Twins in Jeopardy
Originally posted 01/09/2008 09:10PM
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was cited by California regulators for placing Dennis Quaid's newborn twins in immediate jeopardy by giving them 1,000 times the proper dosage of medication, the Los Angeles Times reports.
"This violation involved multiple failures by the facility to adhere to established policies and procedures for safe medication use," the Department of Public Health writes in a 20-page report. "These violations caused, or were likely to cause, serious injury or death to the patients who received the wrong medication."

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center – the facility which treated Dennis Quaid's twins when they were mistakenly overdosed with Heparin – announced several changes to hospital policy Tuesday.
"Although this was a rare event, and attributable to human error, it is also an important opportunity for the entire institution to explore any and all ways we can further improve medication safety," the hospital's chief medical officer, Dr. Michael L. Langberg, said in the statement.

Originally posted 12/04/2007 05:00PM
Dennis and Kimberly Quaid's twins have fully recovered and were recently discharged from the hospital, their lawyer Susan E. Loggans confirms to PEOPLE.
"The twins are back home," Loggans said of the newborns, Boone and Zoe. "Their condition is fantastic, they're smiling. Zoe looks like her mom, and Boone looks like his dad. They've fully recovered from the accident and it's doubtful they'll suffer long-term effects from the overdose."
