Sometimes even the worst things happen for a reason. Desiree Hartsock, star of The Bachelorette, had fallen hard for Brooks Forester, the former male model she believed was The One out of 25 suitors vying for her hand on the ABC reality show.
But when he made it clear he didn't return her feelings – and a stunned 7.8 million viewers watched her collapse in sobs – "I was blind-sided," Hartsock, 27, says now.

In one of the most surprising moments in Bachelor history, standout suitor Brooks Forester left Desiree Hartsock blindsided when he said goodbye just days before the Bachelorette's final rose ceremony.
"I realized that when I was away from Des, I wasn't having these moments of anguish," he tells PEOPLE. "That was a big indicator to me that my feelings weren't there."
He says: "I wanted so badly for [the relationship] to work out, and it was so close I could almost touch it. But I needed to walk away. She deserved to be in love with someone who was equally in love with her."

Former Bachelor contestant Desiree Hartsock is calling the shots and handing out the roses as the current star of The Bachelorette. The bridal stylist will blog all season long on PEOPLE.com about her dates, the guys and the difficult decisions she must make. You can also follow Desiree on Twitter.
I want to start by thanking everyone who watched my journey to find love this season on The Bachelorette. It is a challenging and emotional position to be in so I can't express how grateful I am for the love and support from my family, friends and viewers. I appreciate the encouraging words from many and the understanding that love can be unpredictable.
My relationship with Drew flourished in affection and through in-depth conversation. I enjoyed seeing the compassion and love he had in his heart and the sincerity that showed through his eyes. After our last date in Antigua, I felt like our relationship didn't move forward and I started to question if we were right for each other. He has so many qualities I was looking for in a partner but I had to put qualities aside and see if I could really picture our future together.

After revealing their love on national TV, Hartsock is ready to move to Seattle – this weekend! – to be with her fiancé. And a wedding is already in the works.

Discovery Channel's annual fin-fest is in full swing (Voodoo Sharks, anyone?) but it wasn't the only network dishing out drama last night.
Desiree Hartsock's heart was on the line Monday after front-runner Brooks Forester bailed during the two-part gut-wrenching Bachelorette finale.
Viewers were left guessing if the blindsided bridal stylist would choose between poetic mortgage broker Chris Siegfried and intensely romantic marketing analyst Drew Kenney – or leave them both behind to mend her broken heart.

It's official – we have a brand new Bachelor!
After Desiree Hartsock's emotional season finale of The Bachelorette, host Chris Harrison announced the franchise's newest star during the After the Final Rose special Monday night.
Although some may have thought Brooks Forester (who broke Desiree's heart in Antigua) was a possibility, fellow former suitors Zak Waddell and Juan Pablo Galavis were early frontrunners for the gig. While Desiree expressed her hopes for Zak, PEOPLE.com readers cast their votes for Juan Pablo.
And, sure enough: Felicidades, Juan Pablo! The Venezuelan former soccer player and single dad will be the next star of The Bachelor!

After a tearful and emotional goodbye to her frontrunner, Brooks Forester, The Bachelorette's Desiree Hartsock faced another tough decision.
Would she abandon her quest for love? Or would she be able to move forward with one of the two men still vying for that final rose?
Although she was "blindsided," "devastated" and said she just wanted to go home, Desiree decided to face Chris Siegfried and Drew Kenney.

Last week, we saw a heartbroken Desiree Hartstock in Antigua.
After Brooks said goodbye, she was left to choose between Drew and Chris – and it's anyone's bet who, if anyone, gets the final rose in tonight's finale.
Well, having been through it herself, season 6 Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky is putting her money on Chris. "I would be willing to put a hefty bet in Vegas on it being Chris in the end," Fedotowsky told PEOPLE at the Herbal Essences Bachelorette finale viewing party in New York City Monday.

As suspected, Brooks was just not that into The Bachelorette's Desiree Hartsock and thus her frontrunner for a fairy tale ending excused himself from the tournament of roses. He left her a weeping pile of emotion on an Antigua pier and left producers and viewers alike wondering if the show would go on.
"The first thing I said when I walked out after [my conversation with] Brooks was, 'We might be done.' We were in the home stretch trying to set up a happy ending and magic proposal. This was a curveball," host Chris Harrison said during a press call Thursday.
