Twitter is a really amazing way to stay up-to-date on everything from your friends' lives to national and local news, from breaking stories to entertainment. Twitter can also have the power of immediate communication with people you have never met. Sometimes the comments can be nasty, but sometimes Twitter can bring strangers together in magical ways!

This amazing cancer fighter, Kelli, has been Tweeting me since 2008 and over the summer had asked if I would come visit her at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. I had never been to St. Jude, but, like most, have seen and been moved by their commercials and the power of their mission. This past week, I had my first visit to this truly inspirational and hope-giving hospital.

I've always loved PEOPLE because it was created to showcase individual stories and it continues to do so. From the amazing tales of the Heroes Among Us section, to celebrities we watch, to stories of our neighbors who are going through struggles.

With that, I want to now angle this blog more toward your stories, your struggles that you feel no one is listening to and your questions that you want answered.

I do not throw around the word "depression" lightly. That's why you'll never hear me say any phrases like, "Ugh, I would kill myself if ..." I've seen too much and have counseled too many people who really struggle, to be so flippant about suicide or depression.

I have been depressed once before in my life – it was during my first bout of ovarian cancer. I was six months into treatment and got a call telling me that they had to extend and alter my chemo because it wasn't working.

Getting hurt after you reluctantly open up to someone isn't pretty. This week's episode of Rivals 2 was really hard for me to watch. I've known that I'm horrible with dealing with confrontation and being hurt emotionally, but watching it unfold on TV was particularly difficult to stomach.

As we go through different experiences in life we often feel the need to gain and maintain control of our surroundings, hearts and life paths. We all find comfort in things we can control. We yearn for schedules, routines and things that remain constant when the world throws us curveballs.

But when we become ill or encounter various life roadblocks, the urgency and need for that control becomes stronger.

Walls are made to keep things out, to keep things in, to maintain good boundaries among neighbors and for protection. I feel the same can be said of emotional walls.

My last boyfriend told me he could never "get to me" that I never “fully let him in" and, in all honesty, his thoughts were true. I don't feel like I ever gave him that access, because in my mind, until I walk down the aisle, then the relationship is not a certainty and it's not forever.

Success is when preparation meets opportunity.

Some people might call me overly cautious, but I try to make sure that when the right opportunity presents itself that I am 100 percent prepared for it. That, above all, explains why I ran, swam, and trained so hard in preparation for this season of The Challenge. I was terrified that if I slacked off, my cancer treatment side effects would catch up to me in the final.

What's fake?

Wednesday's episode of Rivals 2 on MTV was a pot-stirring challenge like I have never seen before. The trivia game held all the elements to make people turn quicker than a cut apple.

I found it hilarious that one question got everyone's blood to boil. Not "Who's the trashiest in the house?" Nope, that question was laughed off ... but answering "Who's the fakest in the house?" had people going crazy!

I am not a middle-of-the-road type of person. Everyone who truly knows me, knows where I stand on almost every issue and subject. Growing up in a family of six, I learned early on if you don't speak up and have a stance on something, you won't have a voice in anything.

The strength of my voice has varied throughout my run on The Challenge: Rivals II. However, I learned that if you don't play the game, the game will play you.

What holds us back? I think if we dig deep and expose the core reasons why we don't jump in, leap, go for it, etc., we'll discover they're centered around the limiting emotion of fear.

Fear binds us and inhibits us from achieving our full potential. Finding a way to break away from those fears is how we can set ourselves free. Overcoming fear may be uncomfortable, but it's conquerable.
