Nowhere is that more clear than in Wednesday's episode of The Challenge when Brown's ex Chris "CT" Tamburello and her sister Faith return to pay tribute to the fan favorite and healthcare activist, who died at age 34 in November 2014.
"Diem approached everything in her life with bravery, courage and determination," says Challenge host TJ Lavin in an exclusive sneak peek as he introduces Tamburello and Faith to demonstrate a challenge that brings back fond memories of Diem's fearlessness and resilience.
In advance of his appearance on the show, Tamburello talked with PEOPLE about how it felt to return after his unexpected departure with Diem from Battle of the Exes II (they both exited when she was medically evacuated to address her failing health), how the tribute gave Faith new insight on her sister's world and how Diem's legacy has impacted his life – and many others' – in the 14 months since her death.

On Thursday evening, they gathered at New York's No.8 club to celebrate the life of the MTV The Challenge competitor, who died on Nov. 14, 2014, after battling cancer for more than a decade.
"She was one of the good ones," Aneesa Ferreira of MTV's The Real World: Chicago told PEOPLE at the event. "People respected her for standing up to cancer and laughing in its face."

Former MTV reality stars reunited in Washington, D.C., to support cancer awareness and honor the late Diem Brown.
Brown, who rose to fame on MTV's The Real World/Road Rules Challenge, died at age 34 in November 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
On Tuesday, several MTV veterans gathered on Capitol Hill in Brown's memory to support their fellow Real World alum Sean Duffy, now a Wisconsin congressman.

Diem Brown would have turned 35 years old on Friday, and her loved ones celebrated her life and remembered the continuous strength she showed throughout her battle with cancer.
Brown's sister Megan shared a childhood picture as well as the family birthday tradition on Instagram Friday.
"Any other morning on June 12th for as long as I can remember I started it with a phone call. A tradition our family has to never let our birthdays go by without being sung the birthday song ... the whole song, full out, every word. Nine times out of 10 I'd get your voicemail and leave an obnoxious rendition, similar to the one I would receive from you on my birthday. I yearn so badly to make that call," she wrote.

Though MTV's The Challenge is a reality competition known for putting its competitors through insane physical tests, Battle of the Exes II was, without a doubt, the most emotionally taxing installment of the game in series history.
Very early in the show's 26th season, which began filming in Panama last August, fan favorite Diem Brown had to be medically evacuated to New York City, where she ultimately lost her third bout with cancer on Nov. 14 at the age of 34.
Less than two weeks later, Brown's castmate Ryan Knight was found dead on Thanksgiving morning after a night of partying.
Though both Brown and Knight died after the series wrapped filming, the show's winners – who spoke exclusively to PEOPLE after they were revealed on Tuesday night – couldn't help but acknowledge how their friends' deaths shed new light on their own victory and the season as a whole.
For those who haven't watched the Battle of the Exes II finale, be warned there are spoilers ahead.

Two months after The Challenge cast member Ryan Knight died, many of his friends and competitors are celebrating his life on an after show following Tuesday's episode.
News of Knight's Nov. 27 death was a second devastating blow for this season, Battle of the Exes 2, after castmate Diem Brown lost her third fight against cancer just weeks earlier, on Nov. 14.
In keeping with Knight's polarizing personality both on The Challenge and in 2010's The Real World: New Orleans, castmates are simultaneously shaken and amused by the tribute video, previewed exclusively by PEOPLE.

Tuesday's episode of Battle of the Exes 2 saw Brown, 34, sidelined by the excruciating pain she would later learn was colon cancer. After an overnight stay, the pain returned, forcing her to be medically evacuated from the competition.
Accompanying shots of her flight from Panama to New York City, where she underwent surgery and months of treatment before dying on Nov. 14, Brown began her final words on the show: "I'm at a point in my life where I want to just live life."

[BRIGHTCOVE "3972198267001" "" "" "auto"] The new season of The Challenge: Battle of the Exes 2 seems set to be a somber one as two cast members, Diem Brown and Ryan Knight, have died since the season filmed. But, in an exclusive clip from the opener, Brown proves her brief run on Exes 2 would be as poignant and positive as ever.
In this exclusive clip, Brown, who had already battled ovarian cancer twice, shares that winning the competition would help her afford a surrogate to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a mother.
Brown was medically evacuated from her eighth stint on the show before ultimately losing her third battle against cancer on Nov. 14.
