Drew Barrymore's Still Working Out Mother Issues

Originally posted 09/23/2009 09:10AM

Drew Barrymore's got it all – except a good relationship with her mother.

"I am okay with my dad, but my mom and I have yet to work it out," Barrymore, 34, says of her mother, Jaid, in the October issue of InStyle, out Friday. "I don't talk about it because … how do you talk about something you're confused about?'

But the actress and director uses that emotional turmoil to play roles where the mother-daughter dynamic is key, such as in the Emmy-winning HBO Grey Gardens or her new roller-derby feature pic, Whip It – which marks her directorial debut. It may play into her next project, too, which could involve "another potential family that I'll take on."

Toronto Film Festival: Five Movies You'll Want To See

Originally posted 09/20/2009 01:00PM

Too many movies, too little time. That's the story at the Toronto International Film Festival, where 273 feature-length films were shown during the 10-day festival that wrapped Saturday. I managed to see 26 of them during my week's stay. Here's the word on five I really like that will be in theaters soon:

Up In the Air. George Clooney, that smooth-walking combination of star power and smarts, stars in a hugely likable comedy that couldn't be more timely. He plays a contentedly single guy who specializes in firing people, a job requiring that he constantly fly all over the country. Based on a novel by Walter Kirn, the movie is written and directed by Jason Reitman (Juno) and features a breakout supporting performance by Twilight's Anna Kendrick. Opens Nov. 13.

Drew Barrymore Rolls with the Punches

Originally posted 09/16/2009 07:00AM

Stars usually walk away from a film with a paycheck and a some happy memories – but Drew Barrymore left her new movie, Whip It, with bruises.

Just don't expect much sympathy from fellow castmates Ellen Page, Eve, Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis – because they may have been the ones who meted out the punishment in this tale of tough roller-derby girls who grapple, block, and elbow each other mercilessly as they race around the track. Whip It opens Oct. 2.

To get in fighting form, the debut director (who also plays derby girl "Smashley Simpson") and her cast reported to roller-derby boot camp in Ann Arbor, Mich., where they perfected the art of the rail check and other classic derby moves.

• Justin Long treated Drew Barrymore to an authentic Indian dinner at Brick Lane Curry House in New York's East Village. The couple walked in without a reservation and went unrecognized in the restaurant, clearly enjoying each other's company. The two skipped dessert, but they were super sweet with the staff: Long left a nearly 30% tip while Barrymore chatted up the manager.

As the summer blazes on, celebrity romance has been heating up. Meanwhile, Chace Crawford was spotted smooching Twilight's Ashley Greene. And exes Drew Barrymore and Justin Long say they're just friends, but the two, who are filming Going the Distance together, sure seem like more than that off-camera.

In matters of the heart, it turns out that Justin Long is neither a Mac nor a PC – he's PDG.

"I hate to brag, but I'm pretty damn good," Long tells PEOPLE, "in terms of loyalty and just being there."

Not that he's perfect. "I have a time-management problem that's not very appealing for girls," he says. "I'm not very good with that – I'd say that's definitely a flaw that I'm trying to work on."

Drew Barrymore Clears Up the Justin Long Mystery

The only thing certain about Drew Barrymore and Justin Long – as far as they're being a couple – is that there's no question they're telegenic together. But that's not enough information for the ever-curious Ellen DeGeneres.

"You were a couple," the inquisitive TV host says to Barrymore on Friday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "Then you broke up, but you're together a lot now."

"We're good friends, and we're doing a film this summer," replies Barrymore, who herself notes, "and I think it's very confusing."

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long are not shy with their admiration for one another.

"I adore him," Barrymore, who wore a retro flesh-tone Alberta Feretti gown to the premiere of her HBO movie Grey Gardens, said of Long. "And I thank God that my friend supports me the way he does."

The off-again, on-again pair were affectionate the night of the premiere Tuesday. During the screening, she leaned over her seat to give him a quick smooch. At the movie's after-party at the Pierre hotel, Long, 30, and Barrymore, 34, posed for photos together. Later inside the hotel, she dragged Long into the dining room while holding his hand and gave him a long embrace, whispering into his ear.
