In the ongoing Elizabethan drama that is Elizabeth Taylor's life, the movie star has survived another hospital visit – this time to repair a leaky heart valve – and is assuring her public all is well.

On her Dame Elizabeth Twitter page, the AIDS activist, perfume mogul and Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Best Actress Oscar winner, 77, tells fans, "Dear Friends, My heart procedure went off perfectly. It's like having a brand new ticker. Thank you for your prayers and good wishes … I know they all helped. Love you, Elizabeth."

Taylor underwent a laparoscopic operation, which is considered experimental. "It's called MitraClip," Dr. Edward Verrier, professor of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, told ABC News. "It's an unproven but new technology that's being introduced as a potential [and less-invasive] alternative to open-heart surgery."

Elizabeth Taylor is letting friends and fans know that she is about to go to the hospital for heart surgery.

"Any prayers you happen to have lying around I would dearly appreciate. I'll let you know when it's all over. Love you, Elizabeth," the 77-year-old star wrote on her Twitter page Tuesday afternoon.

That message was preceded by two others:

• "Dear Friends, I would like to let you know before it gets in the papers that I am going into the hospital to have a procedure on my heart."

• "It's very new and involves repairing my leaky valve using a clip device, without open heart surgery, so that my heart will function better."

Kelly Osbourne sent well wishes to Taylor over Twitter, writing, "Good luck. My mother I and praying and thinking of you!"

Comedian Sandra Bernhard also tweeted to Taylor saying, "You have weathered harsher storms dear lady, we send every variety of prayer from many lands may they carry you through!"

Pouring out her grief on her Twitter page, Elizabeth Taylor says she's going to skip Michael Jackson's memorial – and she feels the pop star would have approved of her decision.

"I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others. How I feel is between us. Not a public event," she writes.

Taylor, 77, one of Jackson's closest friends, says she was asked to speak at the Tuesday event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. "I cannot be part of the public whoopla," she writes. "And I cannot guarantee that I would be coherent to say a word."

She's played the Queen of Egypt and Maggie the Cat, but Thursday night Dame Elizabeth Taylor played to one of her most appreciative audiences yet – as the happily imbibing guest for a benefit at the Abbey, West Hollywood's premiere gay bar.

"This just doesn’t happen every day," Abbey owner David Cooley tells PEOPLE. "It was not only Elizabeth Taylor, but she was the life of the party."

Though wheelchair-bound, the 76-year-old superstar's appearance saw her blinged to the max ("There were massive stones on every finger," says one partygoer. CLASHED: The 20 contestants on CBS's Survivor: Palau were quickly whittled down to just 17 on Thursday night's premiere episode. The castaways had just become acquainted with their new surroundings when host Jeff Probst said the initial immunity challenge won by Jolanda Jones and Ian Rosenberger (who were the first of the 20 to swim ashore) would last only 10 minutes, until they finished picking their two tribes. The last woman and man chosen, Wanda Shirk and Jonathan Libby, were eliminated from the show. The game's first challenge then pitted the Koror and Ulong teams against each other for team immunity, leaving Ulong to vote off a player. That ended up being Jolanda, in a 6-3 decision. Her parting words: "I am the oldest and I think differently than my tribe. It's an experience I think everyone should try."
