The 20/20 co-anchor returned to TV Friday morning, her first appearance since seeking treatment for alcohol abuse in November.
In a taped sit-down with George Stephanopoulos that aired on Good Morning America, Vargas opened up about her dark struggles with her disease and chronicled her journey back to recovery.

Elizabeth Vargas has checked out of rehab after being treated for alcohol abuse.
"Hello everyone! I am home, and so grateful for all your support and well wishes," Vargas, 51, Tweeted on Tuesday. "I am so much better and taking it one day at a time. :)"
The co-anchor of ABC's 20/20 revealed that she was in treatment on Nov. 6, saying in a statement, "Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction. I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. And feel fortunate to have recognized it for the problem it was becoming."

Elizabeth Vargas has checked into rehab for alcohol abuse, PEOPLE has learned.
The co-anchor of ABC's 20/20, who has recently been absent from the news show, confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that she is currently in treatment.
"Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction. I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. And feel fortunate to have recognized it for the problem it was becoming," Vargas, 51, says.

TV host Stacy Keibler says that her so-called desire to be married was not to blame for her recent split with George Clooney.
The couple, who confirmed their break-up last week, had dated for two years.
"Actually, everyone that knows me thinks that's the funniest story," Keibler, 33, told Good Morning America"'s Elizabeth Vargas on Wednesday, shooting down reports that it was her desire for motherhood and marriage that caused the breakup.
"That's the last thing on my mind," Keibler said. "I don’t really think about that right now. We didn't discuss that."

Tom Hanks took a G-rated morning show into R-rated territory, using the F-word on-air Friday.
Appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, the Oscar winner, 56, was asked by Elizabeth Vargas to speak in the accent of one of the characters from his new movie Cloud Atlas.
"Most of it is swear words," he warned. Then, in a thick accent, he said, "I want people to f–––ing …" – before stopping himself, slapping his hand to his mouth, and quickly apologizing.
