"I had these knee-high boots, and I would stick a bottle of wine in the boot," Vargas tells PEOPLE exclusively. "Nobody looks in the boot."

"It was terrifying once I started to hear the particulars," Vargas, 54, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's issue. "I will never know who that person was that saved my life."
Vargas woke up in a New York City hospital unaware of how she got there and, to this day, still doesn't know exactly what happened.

After seeking treatment for alcohol dependency in August, Elizabeth Vargas is returning to her job at ABC.
