Friends React to Oprah Winfrey's Decision to End Show

Originally posted 11/20/2009 08:00AM

As the realization sinks in that, after a quarter of a century, Oprah Winfrey will be ending her syndicated talk show Sept. 9, 2011 – a decision she intends to explain on her program Friday – rivals, admirers and industry analysts are chiming in with their reactions.

As with most things Oprah, there's admiration mixed with a sense of awe.

Martha Stewart, attending Diddy's 40th birthday bash at New York's Plaza Hotel Thursday night (the news about Winfrey had broken late that afternoon), pointed out that Oprah was not retiring.

"She'll do another show," said the domestic diva, 68. "She's evolving. She's fabulous."

Robert Pattinson: A Fan Took Her Clothes Off for Me

Originally posted 11/18/2009 05:40PM

Robert Pattinson didn't realize the power of his own words – until a fan starting stripping after he made an off-hand suggestion.

It happened "after a period of signing 500 signatures," the New Moon heartthrob tells Ellen DeGeneres on her show that airs Friday.

"You kind of get 10 seconds with each person and you never really say anything and I kind of got bored of saying, 'Hey, how are you doing?'" Pattinson tells the talk-show host. "[A fan] said in her 10 seconds, 'What can I do to get your attention?' I was like um, just take your clothes off."

The fan's reaction? "She stood there and frantically started taking her clothes off and got dragged out of the room by security," says Pattinson. "I never felt more terrible."

Just because she's not wearing her wedding ring much of the time anymore doesn't mean that Kate Gosselin's back on the market. In fact, the reality-show mom says it's not going to happen while she remains the focus of so much media attention.

"I'm not thinking about it, but the thought has crossed my mind at some point [that] it's going to be scrutinized," Gosselin, 34, tells Ellen DeGeneres on an episode of her talk show set to air Wednesday. "Let's not talk about it."

DeGeneres agrees: "Exactly, and some guy is going to have that same concern."

Ellen DeGeneres already has her first fan as an American Idol judge – Kara DioGuardi.

"I think it's a genius decision," DioGuardi, the judge who joined the top-rated FOX show last season, said at the Entertainment Tonight/PEOPLE Emmy after-party. "I wish I had thought of it."

Mostly, DioGuardi said she's looking forward to the new dynamic on the show now that DeGeneres is replacing the recently departed Paula Abdul as the show's "nice" judge.

Paula Abdul Channels Ellen DeGeneres

Originally posted 09/18/2009 08:00AM

Paula Abdul beat the haters to the punch on live TV Thursday night when she dressed up as – and even did a dance like – her would-be nemesis: Ellen DeGeneres.

"Why are you all staring at me? Can't a girl try out for a new job?," the recently unseated American Idol judge (wearing a blonde wig and black pant suit) asked as she sashayed Ellen-style onto the stage of VH1's Divas Live and plopped into the chair of a set that mimicked that of the daytime talk-show host – who is set to replace her on Idol.

"All kidding aside," good-naturedly added Abdul, 47, who hosted this year's Divas from the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City, "[I have] nothing but love for Ellen, and I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on your new gig. And call me! You gotta call me if you have any Simon problems, 'cause you know, I know him best."

Ellen DeGeneres Rates Jennifer Aniston's Singing

Originally posted 09/16/2009 05:45PM

No, she wasn't auditioning for American Idol but during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday, Jennifer Aniston did end up singing a little.

"They promised me you wouldn't do this to me," Aniston, 40, told DeGeneres after revealing that she is learning to sing and play a dobro for an upcoming film role. But despite her protests, Aniston belted out a few bars of the George Gershwin standard "I've Got a Crush on You," then retorted, "I'm absolutely mortified that you did that to me."

Ellen's verdict? "I would put you through to the next round," DeGeneres said, referencing her new gig as an American Idol judge.

Ellen DeGeneres is already receiving a rave review from the judges' panel at America's Got Talent, and it came only minutes after the announcement she'd be Paula Abdul's replacement on American Idol.

"She will be a breath of fresh air on that show, a complete breath of fresh air," Osbourne, 56, told PEOPLE Wednesday. "It's new blood. And [American Idol] needed something new to happen."

"I think if they had replaced Paula with another singer, Janet Jackson or J.Lo, it would have been too expected,” she said. "'Oh well, there we go, another singer.' And with Ellen, you've got someone who knows about entertaining, and everything that goes into it, which also speaks for the people."
