The sensitive guy is now the tough guy: Ethan Hawke picks up a gun and grit for Assault on Precinct 13, playing a Detroit police sergeant trapped on New Year's Eve in a battle with crooked cops and prisoners. It's a role that 10 years ago would have been unlikely for the goateed star known for long walks along the Seine (Before Sunrise) and rejecting the establishment (Reality Bites). But since doing 2001's Training Day – for which he earned an Oscar nod – mainstream moviemaking has become acceptable in his book. "My taste has kind of expanded," Hawke, 34, says. The father of two (with ex-wife Uma Thurman) recently chatted about going commercial, playing the action star and chalking it all up to good fortune.

Ethan Hawke certainly has proved his versatility, going from playing the terrorized partner of Denzel Washington's rogue cop in 2001's Training Day to revisiting the sensitive, earnest young man he played in 1995's Before Sunrise in last year's Before Sunset. So, what's his secret? Life experience. "Well, if you're in the arts, as corny as it sounds, your life is the stuff from which you work with," said Hawke, who is back in a police uniform for his new movie, Assault on Precinct 13. "That's why it's important to read a lot. I mean, it's important to learn a lot. It's important to live a lot. My children affect me. Friends of mine say that, like, after Training Day, there was some kind of change in my work, and I chalk a lot of that up to simply development. It was my daughter and turning 30. All of these things affect you."

A HAWKE TELL-ALL: Actor Ethan Hawke denied "annoying" tabloid reports that claimed his infidelity was the root cause for his split with wife Uma Thurman. In the new issue of Details magazine, Hawke says that although he and Thurman are likely headed for a divorce, there is more to the story than meets the eye. "If our problems were that simple, we'd still be together," he said. Regardless, the 33-year-old actor said this has been an exceedingly difficult period of his life. "If my forties are where people say (life is) really good," Hawke said, "I'm probably going to be suicidal."

Any chance of reconciliation between Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman will likely be put to rest when the new issue of Details magazine hits newsstands.
