Halle Berry: Gabriel and I Love Our Daughter 'More Than Life'

It appears the worst might be over for Oscar-winner Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, who have recently been engaged in a custody battle over their daughter Nahla, 3.
"When there's a child involved, it's a relief when you can resolve things in a good way," the actress, who revealed that court proceedings have gone well without detailing the exact agreement, tells Extra.
"Our issues were never about fighting for her," Berry says of Nahla. "We both know a child needs both her parents. But what I want to say about it is sometimes, as a couple, you reach an impasse. We needed a court and a judge to help us work out some of the delicate issues, and I'm so happy we've arrived at that place – because for her sake, this is the best way. We both love her more than life."

In the middle of a custody tangle with her ex, Halle Berry makes clear her focus is on raising her daughter.
"It is just joy, it's joy," Berry, 44, said Friday night at the 42nd NAACP Image Awards. "I wouldn't say it's the hardest work I do, I would say it's the best work I do."
Berry, who won for outstanding actress for Frankie & Alice, says she hopes Nahla, who tuns 3 this month, is inspired by her mom someday.

An ongoing custody battle with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry over their daughter Nahla isn't stopping Halle Berry from earning some positive attention.
The actress, 44, appeared upbeat when she accepted the Lacoste Spotlight Award at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
Introduced by pal Samuel L. Jackson, Berry gave an energetic acceptance speech full of laughs and smiles, following a montage that showcased the actress's versatility in a selection of various roles over the span of her career.
"Halle looked radiant and seemed giddy on stage," an onlooker tells PEOPLE of Berry, clad in an Elie Saab gown. "She stuck completely on topic of the event and didn't mention anything about her personal life, but she had a happy aura. She even skipped away from the podium when her speech was done, and gave Samuel L. Jackson a big hug."

Halle Berry made her first appearance Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court in her custody dispute with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.
Berry, wearing a gray striped suit, did not testify in the closed-door hearing. Aubry was not there, but was represented by his lawyers.
The hearing centered on whether Berry could take their daughter Nahla, who turns 3 next month, to New York so the actress could film for a role for New Year's Eve, which Aubry was against, according to TMZ.

Halle Berry's latest movie was supposed to be the big-budget romantic comedy New Year's Eve – but for the actress and her ex, Gabriel Aubry, the feel-good film may have been the final straw in their already-strained custody arrangement over their 2 ½-year-old daughter Nahla.
According to a source close to Berry, the actress's movie contract included compensation for Aubry to accompany her and Nahla to New York City for about two weeks of filming. But when Aubry decided not to go, says the source, Berry was forced to abruptly pull out of the film. She has since been replaced by Katherine Heigl.
Berry, 44, who has a nanny, currently shares custody of Nahla with Aubry. She pulled out of the New Line production not because she wouldn't have childcare help but because she was concerned about leaving Nahla in L.A. while she filmed in N.Y.C., claims the source.

The custody war between Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry publicly ignited this week – but several sources close to Berry tell PEOPLE that the real trouble began brewing around Christmas.
Berry became alarmed, say the sources, when the couple's 2½-year-old daughter Nahla became hysterical after Aubry came to pick her up for a visit a few days before the holiday.
"She was crying and kicking and screaming," claims one source. "She was hanging onto her mother's legs so she didn't have to go."

But tensions rose quickly, and now Nahla's parents are gearing up for a custody battle that's already turning nasty, with ugly accusations flying.
"Once they broke up he became verbally threatening to Halle," Aubry's former friend and business partner Stephane Bibeau tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. "He is a vindictive guy." Bibeau and other sources close to Berry, 44, claim that Aubry, 35, has used a racial slur against her.

Gabriel Aubry is responding for the first time to Halle Berry's claims that their 2½-year-old daughter Nahla may be unsafe in his care.
"While Gabriel is disappointed in Halle’s decision to falsely malign him publicly and for her own purposes, he refuses to be pulled into her dispute over a canceled film production," a rep for the model, 34, said Tuesday in a statement to Access Hollywood.
"Gabriel also refuses to air their issues in the press as he believes this may ultimately harm their daughter," the statement continues. "The fact is that Gabriel is a caring father who shares custody of Nahla."

Halle Berry says she's preparing to go to court with her ex Gabriel Aubry over custody of their 2 ½-year-old daughter Nahla.
"Halle has serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time and is prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her," the actress's rep tells PEOPLE.
To clear her schedule for custody litigation, Berry, 44, pulled out of the film New Year's Eve, set to start filming this week in New York. She's being replaced by Katherine Heigl.
"She has attempted to resolve these custody issues amicably with her daughter's father, Gabriel Aubry, directly, but given his lack of cooperation, Halle has no choice but to seek swift judicial intervention," her rep says.
