Gerard Butler: Near-Death Surfing Accident Was 'Close Call'

Gerard Butler is battling an addiction – to surfing.
Butler, 42, says he wanted to get right back into the water after his near-death experience when he was pulled underwater and dragged over a reef in Northern California last month while filming the surf movie Of Men and Mavericks.
"I was going to go back that day," the 300 star said on the U.K.'s The Graham Norton Show. "I was actually in the ambulance and wanted to go back, which was a little crazy, but it’s pretty addictive."

Gerard Butler was pulled underwater and dragged over a rocky reef Sunday by a large set of waves while he was filming the surfing movie Of Men and Mavericks in Northern California.
The actor, 42, was taken to Stanford Medical Center dazed but not seriously injured, after being rescued by a safety patrolman, according to ESPN.com.
"[Butler] had that 100-yard stare that surfers get after a two-wave hold-down or near-death experience," reports ESPN.

Gerard Butler may be in Santa Cruz, Calif., for work, but the actor took time to celebrate his 42nd birthday with friends in nearby San Francisco. A slimmed-down Gerard Butler settled in for a late and leisurely dinner at San Francisco's Redwood Room inside the Clift Hotel. The actor sipped soda water while his friends ordered some appetizers, including shrimp cocktail. Butler and his four friends generally enjoyed the scene – and even invited some patrons at the bar to join their table.

He's been getting a lot of attention for his fluctuating body mass, but Gerard Butler says his recent weight loss is easily explained.
"I'm prepping for a surf movie," Butler, 41, told PEOPLE at a Machine Gun Preacher screening Tuesday in New York. "So I'm surfing every day for Mavericks."
For the role of mentor to surfer Jay Moriarity, Butler is combining his daily water sports with a cardio regimen and yoga, the tanned (and toned) star told E!.

It was obvious Gerard Butler had been losing some weight, but it wasn't until he shed his shirt after a charity soccer match that the extent of his efforts became clear.
Butler, 41, showed off his newly ripped abs and chiseled arms to go with his shock of blond hair Tuesday, all part of preparing for the surfing movie Mavericks, while also goofing for the camera by sticking out his tongue.
Not only does he look good, but it's helping his game. His team won 5-2 in a game benefiting Oxfam.
