Gerard Butler: Katherine Heigl Will Be an Amazing Mom

As first time mom Katherine Heigl nests with her newly adopted baby girl, her Ugly Truth costar Gerard Butler raves that she will be a natural at motherhood.

"She will be an amazing mom," Butler told PEOPLE at the premiere of his new film Law Abiding Citizen in New York City Wednesday. "She's incredibly responsible, smart and loving. This is a huge deal for her and she's going to take to it like a duck to water."

In fact, the Scottish actor, 39, said Heigl used her maternal instincts on him while working together. "She mothered me," he said. "Anytime I was feeling under the weather or was having a hard day, that's when she was amazing. She would always come and check on me. I think she's naturally a caretaker in the best way."

New York Man Accuses Gerard Butler of Hitting His Dog

Jennifer Aniston's new leading man, Gerard Butler, is at the center of a canine controversy after a New York dog owner accused him of striking one of his animals earlier this week near the set of Butler's romantic comedy The Bounty.

Retired banker Fred Varecka told Radar Online that the actor struck one of his greyhounds, Mayfly, after Butler's unleashed pug came over to check out the two pups Monday afternoon in Queens, N.Y. "My dog crashed into a fence before 'yelping' in pain," Varecka claims. "I asked him: 'What did you hit my dog for?' But he just kept ranting and raving that our dog should be put down – it was unbelievable because the dogs never came into contact at any time."

But a person with knowledge of the situation tells PEOPLE Pets that one of the greyhounds "attacked Gerry's pug. Gerry had to physically get in the middle of the two of them to protect the little dog. And then he quickly put a leash on his dog. As far as I know, they are exaggerating; Gerry is an animal lover and simply separated the dogs.

"Gerry is not going to respond to this because he knows he didn't do anything wrong," the source continues. "He's devastated that these people are saying these things, he would never hurt another animal."

A rep for Butler tells PEOPLE: "A larger greyhound repeatedly attacked Gerard’s small pug, so he separated them to protect both dogs.”

If Gerard Butler was dating Jennifer Aniston, he'd be the first to admit it, he says.

"If I was, I would say I was," the actor told British TV show GMTV on Monday.

Butler, 39, has been recently and repeatedly linked to Aniston, with whom he's currently filming The Bounty in Manhattan.

But even though the two look cozy in photos, he says there is nothing to it. "It's just that if you're not married in Hollywood and you're working with somebody else who's single, you're having a thing with her."

"That is just annoying. People say I'm always dating so and so, and sometimes it's three people in one day," says the actor, 39.

"I'm trying to make movies, work hard and do my best. Then this kind of thing happens and people start to associate me more with that. It gets ridiculous."
