In what is being called a breakthrough in a long and frustrating crime, British Metropolitan Police are said to be targeting three burglars for their possible involvement in the 2007 disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, who was snatched from her hotel room in the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.

Six years later, the hunt continues.
British police have released two photofits of the man sought for questioning about the disappearance of the nearly 4-year-old Madeleine McCann, who was snatched from her hotel room in the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.
The computer-generated pictures are based on descriptions provided by new witnesses who claim to have seen the man on the night of Madeleine's disappearance.
Metropolitan Police describe him as white, between 20-40 years old, with short brown hair, of medium build, medium height and clean shaven.
On Monday, investigators in the case plan to make another appeal to the public on the BBC program Crimewatch, which is set to air in the U.K., the Netherlands and Germany.

As Scotland Yard investigators prepare to head to Portugal to take the next step in their investigation of Madeleine McCann's disappearance, her father says he is grateful for the work they've already done.
"We have been incredibly fortunate in the last two years to have the Metropolitan Police reviewing the case and now actively investigating," McCann told PEOPLE July 28, shortly after finishing the Virgin Active London Triathlon to raise money for the charity Missing People.
"It is very unlikely that someone is just going to walk up and say, 'Here she is,' " he says. "So you have got to chase it."

Eighteen months after their child's disappearance and nearly four months after Portuguese police officially closed the books on their probe, the parents of Madeleine McCann have revealed they are only a fraction of the way through analyzing voluminous files relating to the unsolved case.
Writing a rare blog on a Web site dedicated to finding Madeleine, her father, Dr. Gerry McCann, says on behalf of himself and wife Kate (also a doctor), "We continue to work very hard behind the scenes. Our support team has been expanded as we try to identify what has been done, what has not been done and what can still be done to help find Madeleine."
He adds, "We are not yet halfway through the Portuguese files but there is less information within the files than we were expecting."
